This prescription originated during the Hui-ch'ang era of the Tang Dynasty. A Buddhist monk (Tou-t'o) built a thatched hut in Chung Village, I-ch'un County. He had an ancient-looking appearance and was between 140 and 150 years old. He purchased several mu of land to grow millet for his own sustenance. An elderly villager named Peng frequently visited his hut; their relationship was very close, and Peng sometimes assisted him with farming.
One day, Peng's son climbed a tree to cut branches but accidentally fell to the ground, suffering a fracture of the neck and contusion of the arm, groaning incessantly. Peng reported this to the Daoist practitioner, who examined the patient, ordered the purchase of several types of medicinal herbs, prepared them personally, and administered them as a decoction. Soon the pain subsided, and within a few days, the patient recovered to normal condition. People then realized that the Daoist practitioner possessed medical skills, and those seeking treatment became numerous. The practitioner grew weary of this attention. Consequently, he handed the prescription to Peng, instructing him to prepare it himself, and swore him to secrecy: do not obtain it casually, do not sell it lightly, and do not transmit it to unworthy persons. From then on, the treatment of injuries followed the lineage of the Peng family.
When Peng first met the practitioner, he appeared to be about thirty years old. Although now old, his demeanor remained unchanged from before. When asked for his name, he replied "Daoist Lin." When asked for his origin, he said he was from Chang'an. Initially, the practitioner kept his door closed and avoided worldly affairs, so few people visited him. Only one gentleman, Mr. Deng, would visit every spring or autumn when the weather was clear and crisp, bringing his children and always carrying wine and food. The practitioner hung a gourd ladle on the wall. When Mr. Deng arrived, he would take the ladle to pour wine; if Peng encountered him, he would also drink. Both engaged in conversation and laughter throughout the day. When drunk, they would sing loudly, with lyrics stating: "Learning to govern the world, learning to govern the world becomes useless; Joy in the mountains, the mountain land is suitable for plowing and digging; With wine in the gourd ladle, I share with you; Drunk lying in the thatched hut, who calls me awake? Suddenly hearing twin cranes cry under the pine shade, rising up as the sun shines through the thin forest." Peng, being simple-minded, did not understand the meaning of the words, but memorized the singing and learned the tune. Whenever he returned home and sang to others, people did not comprehend. After a long time, Mr. Deng ceased to visit. When Peng asked about the practitioner, he was told that the practitioner had ascended to immortality, yet Peng never fully understood. Later, the Inspector-General of Jiangxi traveled to Yüan Chou while inspecting the circuit. Hearing the song sung by Peng, he found it strange, questioned the lyrics, and learned the practitioner's surname. He then sent someone to accompany Old Peng to the hut to invite him. Upon arrival, the practitioner had already departed, leaving only the ladle behind. The Inspector deeply regretted this, noting that Peng had transmitted his various prescriptions for treating injuries. Therefore, he renamed the village "Gong" Village. The practitioner had several written works, but what he transmitted to Peng was merely the last volume.
