Headache, stiffness of the neck and occiput, rigidity of the lower back and spine, fever with aversion to cold, and nausea are manifestations of a pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. If chills appear first, it is a disease of the root (Ben); if fever appears subsequently, it is a disease of the branch (Biao). If there is even slight headache, aversion to cold, and body heat, regardless of the number of days since onset, dispersing methods should be applied immediately. Naturally, the heat will subside and the body will become cool; what complications could arise?
Spontaneous sweating due to exterior deficiency indicates that wind has injured the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi); solidifying the exterior is indicated. Absence of sweating due to exterior excess indicates that cold has injured the Nutritive Blood (Ying Xue); releasing the exterior is indicated.
A floating and tight pulse with strength indicates Cold Damage (Shang Han). A floating and slow pulse without strength indicates Wind Injury (Shang Feng).
In winter, when contracting true Cold Damage, Sheng Yang Fa Biao Tang (Ascending Yang and Releasing Exterior Decoction) [i.e., Modified Ma Huang Tang] is used. In winter, when contracting wind, Shu Xie Shi Biao Tang (Dispersing Pathogens and Solidifying Exterior Decoction) [i.e., Modified Gui Zhi Tang] is used. In spring and autumn, in cases without sweating, Qiang Huo Chong He Tang (Notopterygium Harmonizing Decoction) is used to release the exterior; in cases with sweating, Jia Jian Chong He Tang (Modified Harmonizing Decoction) is used to solidify the exterior. In summer, in cases without sweating, Shen Zhu Tang (Divine Operation Decoction) is used; in cases with sweating, the aforementioned Jia Jian Chong He Tang is used.
Eye pain, dry nose, insomnia, and mild aversion to cold are manifestations of a pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel. If eye pain and aversion to cold with body heat appear first, it is a disease of the Yangming Channel (root). If tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium, thirst, and firm stool appear subsequently, it is a disease of the proper Yangming Stomach Fu-organ (branch). The root condition is suitable for muscle-releasing methods, while the branch condition requires urgent purgation; one must judge the situation carefully to apply them appropriately.
Eye pain, dry nose, mild aversion to cold, and body heat indicate the disease is in the channels. Tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium, thirst, firm stool, and absence of aversion to cold indicate the disease is in the fu-organs.
A slightly surging pulse indicates a channel disease. A deep and rapid pulse indicates a fu-organ disease.
Mild aversion to cold accompanied naturally by orbital pain, dry nose, and insomnia: use Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Pueraria Muscle-Releasing Decoction) [i.e., Modified Ge Gen Jie Ji Tang]. Thirst with sweating but unresolved disease: use Ru Shen Bai Hu Tang (Miraculous White Tiger Decoction) [i.e., Modified Bai Hu Tang]. Tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium, thirst, throwing off clothes and bedding, waving hands and kicking feet, yellowish macules, mania and confusion, absence of aversion to cold but preference for heat, and firm stool: for mild cases, Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) is used; for severe cases, one of the Three Cheng Qi Decoctions is selected. All these treatments involve modifications based on Liu Yi Shun Qi Tang (Six-Eight Smooth Qi Decoction) found in secret recipes.
