Baitouweng (Radix Pulsatillae, two liang) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Qinpi (Cortex Fraxini) (each three liang).
The above four ingredients. Use seven sheng of water. Boil to obtain two sheng. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm. If not cured, take another one sheng.
Note: This formula uses cold properties to overcome heat and bitter properties to consolidate yin fluids. It is used to treat dysentery with a sensation of heaviness in the lower abdomen and thirst. The heaviness indicates that pathogenic heat is rushing downward; thirst indicates that body fluids have been damaged by heat. Neither purgatives nor astringents are suitable at this time. One should only clear the heat, and the dysentery will stop naturally.
Zhuye (Leaves of Bambusa, two handfuls) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, half sheng, washed) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, three liang) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, one sheng, heart removed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, two liang, honey-fried) Jingsmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae, half sheng).
The above seven ingredients. Use one dou of water. Boil to obtain six sheng. Remove the dregs. Add Jingsmi. Cook until the rice is ripe and the decoction is ready. Remove the rice. Take one sheng warm. Three times daily.
After the resolution of Shanghan (Cold Damage Syndrome), if there is emaciation due to deficiency, shortness of breath, and rebellious qi causing a desire to vomit, Zhuyegashitang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) is the primary treatment. Note: This condition involves the fluids of the Lung and Stomach, which have been damaged by pathological heat during the illness. Therefore, this formula is used to nourish the Lung and Stomach, restore yin fluids, and clear residual heat. The acrid-cool nature of Shigao and Zhuye, assisted by Renshen, Maidong, Gancao, and Jingsmi, becomes a preparation that benefits the stomach and generates fluids. Because of the rebellious qi and desire to vomit, a small amount of Banxia is added to calm the rebellious qi. This is a method of regulation after recovery. Its efficacy and precision are as remarkable as this.
Muli (Concha Ostreae, calcined) Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis) Shuqi (Herba Dictamni, washed to remove fishy odor) Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis) Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae, calcined) Haizao (Thallus Laminariae seu Eckloniae, washed to remove salt) Shanglugen (Radix Phytolaccae, calcined).
The above ingredients in equal proportions.
The above seven ingredients. Crush each separately and sieve into powder. Then pound them together in a mortar. Mix with Baiyin (rice water) and take one fangcunbi per dose. The effect is expelled through urination. Stop taking the medicine when symptoms cease.
After the recovery from a major disease, if there is fluid accumulation below the waist, Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder) is the primary treatment. Note: After recovery from a major disease, body fluids are already damaged. However, fluid accumulation exists below the waist, indicating that water-dampness is stored in the yin divisions. Water stored in the yin divisions cannot descend unless salty substances are used. Therefore, the salty-cold properties of Muli, Zexie, and Haizao are used to enter the yin divisions and soften hardness. Shuqi is added to unblock the meridians and collaterals. Tinglizi and Shanglu are used to expel water pathogens. Gualougen is added to protect body fluids while moistening the intestines and guiding stagnation downward. The use of powder form is also because post-illness conditions should be treated gradually.
