In the formula of Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction), add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏) half a sheng (a unit of volume) after washing, and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜) three liang. Follow the administration method of Huangqin Tang for the rest.
When Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) and Shaoyang disease (disease of the Shaoyang channel) occur simultaneously (Hebing, combined disease), and spontaneous diarrhea occurs, administer Huangqin Tang. If vomiting is present, use Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria Decoction with Added Pinellia and Fresh Ginger). Note: Vomiting also belongs to Shaoyang syndrome; therefore, Banxia and Shengjiang are added to stop vomiting, which is also the method of modification of Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 干姜), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参) (each three liang).
The above four ingredients are boiled in six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Strain the dregs, and divide into two warm doses.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage disease), if there was originally cold-type diarrhea, and the physician erroneously applied emesis or purgation, the resulting cold-heat rejection aggravates vomiting and diarrhea. If food is vomited immediately upon entering the mouth, Ganjiang Huanglian Huangqin Renshen Tang (Ginger, Coptis, Scutellaria, and Ginseng Decoction) is indicated.
Note: This syndrome involves Yin cold rejecting within and repelling Yang outward. Ganjiang opens the Yin cold, while Huangqin and Huanglian drain the Yang heat. Renshen is used to stimulate and assist Stomach Qi, and can also aid the acrid-warm nature of Ganjiang to break through the Yin pathogen, allowing the rejection to resolve and vomiting to cease spontaneously.
Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos, 旋复花) (three liang), Daizheshi (Ochre, 代赭石) (one liang), Renshen (two liang), Shengjiang (five liang, sliced), Banxia (half a sheng, washed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) (three liang, honey-fried), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 大枣) (twelve pieces, split).
The above seven ingredients are boiled in ten dou of water until six sheng remain. Strain the dregs, and decoct again until three sheng remain. Take one sheng warm, three times daily.
After Shanghan has been resolved by sweating, emesis, or purgation, if epigastric fullness and hardness persist, accompanied by unrelenting belching, Xuanfu Daizhe Tang (Inula and Hematite Decoction) is indicated. Note: Epigastric fullness and hardness indicate deficiency in the Middle Jiao with lingering pathogens. Unrelenting belching indicates rebellious Stomach Qi combined with retained fluid retention. Xuanfuhua guides the fluid downward, and Daizheshi calms the Heart and descends rebellion. For the lingering pathogens, Shengjiang and Banxia are used to open them up. For the rebellious Qi, Renshen, Gancao, and Dazao are used to harmonize. When deficiency is restored and pathogens dissipate, the fullness resolves and belching stops.
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 浓朴) (half a jin, bark removed, fried), Shengjiang (half a jin, sliced), Banxia (half a sheng, washed), Renshen (one liang), Gancao (two liang, fried).
The above five ingredients are boiled in ten dou of water until three sheng remain. Strain the dregs, take one sheng warm, three times daily.
After sweating therapy, if abdominal fullness occurs, Houpo Shengjiang Banxia Renshen Tang (Magnolia Twig, Fresh Ginger, Pinellia, and Ginseng Decoction) is indicated. Note: After sweating, Yang Qi is deficient and unable to transform Qi, leading to the internal knotting of Yin pathogens and congestion causing fullness. The formula primarily uses Houpo to remove fullness, while Shengjiang, Banxia, Renshen, and Gancao awaken the Stomach and harmonize the Spleen, allowing Qi to transform and fullness to disappear spontaneously.
