Principles. According to Qibo’s discussion on wind jue (wind-related syndrome involving interior and exterior) and its treatment, acupuncture combined with decoction should be employed. Therefore, when Zhang Zhongjing treated Taiyang Wind Strike (Taiyang Wind Syndrome), if the patient took Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) but developed irritability without relief, he would acupunctuate Fengchi (GB20) and Fengfu (GV16), then administer Guizhi Tang again, resulting in recovery.
For Yangming Wind Strike, improvement can be achieved through acupuncture. If the exterior condition remains unresolved and the pulse is wiry and floating, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is prescribed; if the pulse is merely floating without other symptoms, Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is given. Thus, I often say that Zhang Zhongjing’s therapeutic methods are entirely based on the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon). The principles of the ancient sages and later sages are identical.
Zhang Zhongjing’s formulas fully embody the method of the "Ten Categories of Formulas" (Shi Ji):
Light agents can dissipate excess; examples include Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction).
Dispersing agents can resolve obstruction; examples include Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) and Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder).
Unblocking agents can guide away stagnation; examples include Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) and Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction).
Astringent agents can secure collapse; examples include Chishizhi Yuyuli Tang (Red Kaolin and Hematite Decoction) and Taohua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction).
Tonifying agents can support weakness; an example is Fuzi Lizhong Wan (Aconite and Centaury Pill for Regulating the Middle).
Heavy agents can calm fright; examples include formulations containing Yuyuli (Hematite) and Daizheshi (Ochre).
Damp agents can moisten dryness; an example is Huanglian Ejiao Tang (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction).
Dry agents can eliminate dampness; an example is Mahang Lianqiao Xixiaodou Tang (Ephedra, Forsythia, and Red Bean Decoction).
Cold agents can overcome heat; examples include Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) and Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction).
Hot agents can control cold; examples include Baitong Tang (Bai Tong Decoction) and Sini Tang (Reversed Cold Decoction).
