After sweating in Taiyang disease, insomnia occurs. If a small amount of water is given, the condition should recover on its own. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: After treating Taiyang disease with sweating, if profuse sweating causes dryness in the stomach, leading to irritability and inability to sleep, and the patient desires to drink, they should be allowed to drink at that time. When the stomach Qi harmonizes, the illness resolves.) In Jueyin disease, irritability and thirst desiring water occur. The quantity of water given should be measured accordingly, following the same principle. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: In Jueyin disease, if the patient is thirsty and desires water, giving them water will lead to recovery.) For Huoluan (plague-like disorder) patients desiring water, Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) is excellent; for those vomiting and desiring water, Zhuling San (Polyporus Powder) cures. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: In Huoluan disease with headache, fever, body pain, and excessive heat desiring water, Wuling San is the primary formula. He also stated: If vomiting occurs due to pathology above the diaphragm, and the patient subsequently desires water, quickly administer Zhuling San for drinking.) Excessive intake may instead cause wheezing and coughing. (The Xiao Qing Long Tang syndrome states: Water retention below the heart leads to wheezing and coughing.) Cold stomach should be known to cause hiccups and other deficiencies. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: With deficiency-cold in the stomach, the patient cannot eat; drinking water induces hiccups.) Grain-like eruptions appear on the skin. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: When the disease is in the Yang aspect, it should be resolved via sweating, but instead, the patient is washed or bathed with water. If irrigated this way, the heat retreats but the pathogen remains, increasing irritability; grain-like eruptions on the skin are the result.) Washing with water to treat the heat of Jie Xiong (chest binding) is pitiful. (Zhang Zhongjing's *Yufan Jing* states: In Jie Xiong with body heat, washing or irrigating with water increases the heat.) Cold Qi encountering water forms Ye (choking/obstruction). ("Ye" sounds like "ye", meaning difficulty swallowing food. Zhang Zhongjing stated: The Cun Kou pulse is floating and large. The physician does not realize this and instead gives cold water, causing profuse sweating. The cold pathogen enters and clashes with the healthy Qi, resulting in immediate Ye.) Whether these methods are permissible depends on the physician's ability to adapt to circumstances.
In Shaoyin disease, when vomiting and diarrhea occur accompanied by further vomiting, non-cold extremities are the sign. Although the mouth feels normal, aversion to cold in the back indicates the need for moxibustion. A micro-choppy pulse also requires moxibustion. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: In Shaoyin disease, if the patient has vomiting and diarrhea, non-reversed cold extremities, and fever, death is avoided. If the pulse is deficient, moxibustion should be applied; seven moxa cones on Jueyin. He also stated: In early Shaoyin disease, if the mouth is normal and there is aversion to cold in the back, moxibustion is indicated. He also stated: In diarrhea with a micro-choppy pulse, fifty moxa cones on Jueyin can be applied.) In Yin Du (poisonous cold) syndrome with Yang deficiency and incessant sweating, abdominal distension and borborygmus sounding like thunder roar. Black complexion combined with cyanotic fingernails require urgent moxibustion at Guanyuan acupoint without error. (Song Di's *Yin Zheng Jue* states: In Yin Du syndrome, with incessant sweating, abdominal distension, borborygmus, dark complexion, and cyanotic nails, urgently moxa Guanyuan from one hundred to three hundred cones.) However, a micro-rapid pulse requires caution against moxibustion. Fire pathogen complications may be difficult to save. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: With a micro-rapid pulse, moxibustion must be strictly avoided. Fire as a pathogen causes irritability and rebellion, scorching bones and injuring sinews, exhausting blood, making recovery difficult.) Floating pulse with severe heat makes moxibustion difficult. Hemoptysis and dry throat are indeed contrary to medical principles. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: With a floating pulse and severe heat, applying moxibustion creates excess. Treating excess as deficiency with fire agitates the throat, inevitably causing hemoptysis. From the micro-rapid pulse onwards, all cases are unsuitable for moxibustion.)
