Daqing (4 liang) Gancao (2 liang, honey-fried) Ejiao (2 liang, stir-fried) Xiangchi (2 liang)
The above four herbs. Cut into pieces, decoct with one dou of water, reduce to three sheng. Strain the dregs. Take one sheng warm each time, five or six times a day until the course is completed. Prepare again, always keeping some decoction available. Drink when thirsty. Non-toxic. Clears heat and stops vomiting and diarrhea. Indicated for Shanghan (Cold Damage) from one to two days, up to ten or more days, where the condition is critical, sweating fails to resolve the heat, or after emesis and purgation, the heat persists. It is excellent for stopping severe dysentery. First decoct Daqing and Gancao, obtain four sheng of liquid, strain the dregs. Add Ejiao and Xiangchi. Once Ejiao is completely dissolved, filter out the residue of Xiangchi. Do not let Xiangchi disintegrate. It is advisable to soak Ejiao in advance to facilitate dissolution.
Hu notes: The above formula is an agent for treating irritability and heat in the Lung and Stomach. This arises because exertion consumes Qi, thereby generating irritability and heat. Currently, few practitioners use Daqing. *Bencao Gangmu* states: Its stems and leaves are deep green; its nature is greatly cold, and its taste is bitter and sweet. It is a non-toxic herb among medicinal plants. Physicians must be aware of this.
Also treats post-Shanghan recovery.
Kuizi (2 sheng) Liangmi (1 sheng)
The above two ingredients. Cook together into a thin porridge. Drink it. More is better. Sweating will lead to immediate recovery.
Hu notes: The above formula lubricates the intestines and harmonizes the Middle Jiao Qi. It uses the sweet and cold nature of Kuizi to benefit the orifices, and the sweet and cool nature of Liangmi to nourish the Stomach.
Formula for Nanzi Yiyi (Male Yin-Yi Exchange) after Shanghan disease.
Xie (one large handful. *Zhou Hou Fang* uses Lan, i.e., Banlangen/Isatis Root. Leaves can make indigo dye. Now planted everywhere.) Shufen (14 grains. Pronounced "jia". Male rat feces. Those with pointed ends are selected.)
The above two ingredients. Decoct with five sheng of water, reduce to two sheng. Drink all while warm, lie down covered. Recovery occurs upon sweating. Also regulates Laofu (post-illness relapse due to overexertion).
Hu notes: Xie is acrid and warm; Lan is bitter and cold. Each is used according to its specific indication. (Also treats Laofu caused by sexual intercourse, characterized by testicular swelling, colicky abdominal pain, and syncope-like death. Zhupi Tang formula. This formula also treats Laofu after Shanghan recovery caused by fatigue from speaking, writing, sitting up, or walking.)
(1 sheng)
The above single ingredient. Decoct with three sheng of water, boil five or six times. Strain the dregs. Take in one dose. Immediate recovery.
Hu notes: The aforementioned indications state: Laofu from sexual intercourse refers to Nv Laofu (female-induced relapse), not Yinyi Yi. Among Laofu syndromes, there are cases of internal heat generated by Yin deficiency; this formula can be selected for use.
Also treats Yinyi Yi.
