A prescription for treating all types of common colds.
Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, stir-fried) Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), each 2 liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) 1 liang; Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 1.5 liang.
The above four ingredients. Coarsely crush. For each dose, take 1 liang. Add 2 zhong of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 1 stalk of Congbai (Sclerium Allii Cepae). Decoct together until the volume reduces to seven-tenths. Strain off the dregs. Take while slightly warm. Cover with a blanket to induce sweating as the goal.
Wang Hu notes: The above prescription is a modified form of Zhang Zhongjing's Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Mahuang Tang specifically enters the Taiyang channel (Taiyang meridian syndrome, governing the exterior of the body) to treat Wind-Cold. This prescription additionally enters the Taiyin channel (Taiyin meridian syndrome, governing dampness) to treat Wind-Cold combined with Dampness. Practitioners should apply it according to the specific pattern.
Furthermore, Liu Hejian's prescription is recorded in *Shanghan Zhunsheng* (Standard Mirror of Cold Damage). I have carefully consulted books such as *Xuanming Bingji Zhige* and others, but there is no mention of "Qingjie San" (Clearing and Releasing Powder). It is likely that *Zhunsheng* had a source from which it was recorded. The "Tiansan San" (Heavenly Water Powder) appears twice in *Shanghan Zhige Xin Yao* (Essentials of the Direct Rule of Cold Damage). It is recorded below.
(Note: In *Zhige*, it is named Yiyuan San (Benefiting Origin Powder), also known as Taibai San. In *Xin Yao*, it is named Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder). Combined with Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Wind-Dispersing and Unblocking Sage Powder), it is named Shuangjie San (Double Releasing Powder).)
Huashi (Talcum, 6 liang, preferably white and fine); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) 1 liang.
Grind into a fine powder. Each dose is 3 qian. Mix with a generous amount of honey and take with warm water. During summer months, cold water may also be used. To resolve and release Cold Damage and induce sweating: use 1 zhan of water, 5 cun of Congbai (Sclerium Allii Cepae), and 50 grains of Douchi (Fermented Soybean). Boil to obtain seven-tenths of the juice. Mix with the powder. Take 3 to 4 doses, stopping when effective. Adding Bohe (Herba Menthae) is especially excellent.
Wang Hu notes: The above prescription is a muscle-releasing agent for the Yangming channel (Yangming meridian syndrome, governing muscles). It has no relation to Taiyang disease. Only when combined with the aforementioned Qingjie San can it treat Wind-Cold pathogenic heat in the Taiyang channel that is severely constrained at the exterior, resulting in anhidrosis and irritability. This is indeed similar to Zhang Zhongjing's Daqinglong Tang (Major Blue-Green Dragon Decoction). The name "Qingjie" implies that both prescriptions must be combined to justify the title.
It also treats Shangfeng (Wind Injury) with exterior deficiency, spontaneous sweating, stiffness and pain in the head and nape, painful distension in the joints, nasal congestion with dry vomiting, aversion to wind, warm hands and feet, and a floating and moderate pulse. This is the pattern for Zhang Zhongjing's Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). One should use Tongjie San or resolve it with Tiansan San. Whether the exterior is deficient or excess, if there is dry mouth and thirst, Shuangjie San (Double Releasing Powder) should be used to induce sweating.
