Treats deficiency of True Yin (True Yin), with hyperactive Ministerial Fire (Ministerial Fire) causing fever, where the heat occurs from noon to midnight. (Belongs to the Yin aspect,) or presents with cold skin and steaming bone sensation. (Empty marrow, fire flames into bones; red lips and malar flush, bitter taste in mouth and dry tongue, (all are signs of internal heat.) tinnitus and vertigo, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, weakness in four limbs, fatigue and desire to lie down, (all due to injury of essence and blood deficiency.) dry and constipated stool, yellow and red urine. (Internal heat.) Six pulses are wiry and rapid, or empty or weak. (All are definite signs of deficiency and damage, not necessarily requiring hemoptysis or cough. Therefore, if there are symptoms of hemoptysis and cough but without the aforementioned internal heat and deficiency symptoms, and the pulse is rapid, it is still not consumption disease; this must be distinguished carefully.) If the disease has lasted long, with little appetite and desire for food, loose stools, (due to damage of Spleen and Stomach.) afternoon chills and shivering, followed by fever after a while, or until cockcrow time, sweating at night during Yin-Mao hours resolving the heat, also use this formula, or treat with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) or Zuogui Wan (Left Restoring Pill) with modifications.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian to 1-2 liang) Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) (2-4 qian, these two Rehmannies tonify Kidney Yin and cultivate the root) Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (3-5 qian, clears Lung and descends fire) Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (steamed, 3-5 qian, together with Fu Ling tonifies Spleen) Yu Zhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) (5-6 qian, treats deficiency-damage with alternating cold and heat, all insufficiencies, used to replace Ren Shen and Huang Qi) Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (superior herb for retreating bone-steaming labor-fever and alternating cold/heat in Yin deficiency) Gui Jia (Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum) (tonifies Kidney Yin, retreats bone-steaming. Both shells roasted with butter, each 3 qian to 1 liang), add Long Yan Rou (Longan Aril) (10 to 30 pieces), add Ren Ru (Human Milk) and Niu Ru (Bovine Milk) (each 1 cup). For bone-steaming internal heat with sweating, add Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii) (2 qian); without sweating, add Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (1.5 qian). For waist pain, add Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) (3-8 qian), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (2 qian). Use remaining ingredients: Zhu Yao Zi (Porcine Kidney) (1 piece), Zhu Ji Sui (Porcine Spinal Cord) (5-8 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (1 fen to 1 qian). For palpitations and insomnia, add Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen) and double the amount of Long Yan Rou. For cough, add Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex) (honey-fried). For bleeding, add Ou Zhi (Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Jus) 1 cup, or Tong Bian (Child's Urine) 1 cup. For poor appetite, add Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (stir-fried, 5 qian to 1 liang). For diarrhea, remove Sheng Di, Tian Dong, and milks; add Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (stir-fried, 3-4 qian), Da Zao Lian Rou (Loti Semen cum Plumula) (20-30 grains), Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) or decoct Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) to decoct the medicine. If Lung channel has no heat and Lung pulse is weak upon pressure, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) according to measure.
Ancient formulas include Ren Shen Gu Ben Wan (Ginseng Root-Solidifying Pill), composed of Ren Shen (2 liang), Er Di (two Rehmannies) and Er Dong (two Ophiopogons) (each 4 liang). Gu Ben Wan plus Niu Xi, Gou Qi, seven ingredients divided equally, is Ji Ling Gao (Ji Ling Elixir).
This formula uses sweet-cold herbs that nourish Yin and replenish essence as the Sovereign (Jun) drugs, meaning "for those who damage the Kidney, benefit their essence." The Ministers (Chen) are the two Dongs, protecting Metal (Lung) and nourishing the source of transformation and generation. Fearing they are too heavy, yin, and moistening, they are assisted by sweet-flat Spleen-tonifying agents to protect Middle Qi, with methods for modification to perfect its application.
