Treats damage to the Heart and Spleen caused by excessive overthinking (The Spleen corresponds to the emotion of Thought). Symptoms include forgetfulness, palpitations, fright, insomnia, (Palpitation refers to the violent beating of the heart.) spontaneous sweating or night sweats. (Sweating.) Or damage to the Spleen due to fatigue and overexertion, (Complex social engagements, arduous travel, and irregular diet can all damage the Spleen.) soreness and pain in the limbs, (The Spleen governs the four limbs and muscles, hence this. However, prolonged standing damages bones, and prolonged walking damages sinews, thereby also injuring the Liver and Kidneys, so there may also be accompanying soreness and weakness in the bones, sinews, waist, and back.) lethargy and poor appetite, (When the Spleen is injured, the Spirit becomes fatigued, hence lethargy; Kidney disease also causes lethargy, and those with exhausted Essence are spiritually fatigued. Poor appetite is due to Stomach injury.) or deficiency-pain of the Heart and Spleen, (This refers to epigastric pain located behind the heart.) irregular bowel movements, (The Spleen governs defecation; when deficient, it may present as stagnation or constipation, which is its primary pathology.) blood losing its controlling function, (Heart deficiency fails to generate Blood, Spleen deficiency fails to control Blood.) erratic menstrual bleeding, (Bleeding may occur upwards or downwards.) or heat sensation due to Blood deficiency and afternoon tidal fever, (During the Shen and You hours, Heart and Spleen Blood deficiency both cause afternoon tidal fever.) or irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, and other symptoms. (These are caused by injury to the Heart and Spleen, but may also result from sexual exhaustion damaging the Kidneys, or anger damaging the Liver, thereby injuring the Chong and Ren vessels.)

Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (used more frequently for deficiency); Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (honey-fried); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soaked in rice washing water for half a day, steamed over soil, dried, then soaked in white honey mixed with human milk, processed to five qian); Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) (calms the Spirit and tonifies the Heart to generate Spirit, five fen, not in the original formula); Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (nourishes Blood and benefits the Liver to generate Heart Blood, five fen, not in the original formula); Long Yan Rou (Longan Aril) (sweet flavor enters the Spleen first, as the Spleen delights in sweetness, ten pieces); Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (aroma promotes Qi movement, as the Spleen delights in free flow, three to five fen). For other conditions such as palpitations and tremors, add Chen Sha (Cinnabaris) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix). For insomnia, use more Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) and Long Yan Rou, adding Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mai Dong, Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium). If phlegm is present, additionally add Zhu Li (Bambusae Sap) and Tian Zhu Huang (Calami Tuber). For spontaneous sweating, use more Ren Shen and Huang Qi. For night sweats, use more Suan Zao Ren, adding Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Sheng Di Huang, and Mai Dong, while reducing or removing Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Mu Xiang, and Yuan Zhi according to symptoms. For limb soreness, add Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Er Di (Sheng Di Huang and Shu Di Huang). For poor appetite, use more Ren Shen. For epigastric pain, double the dose of Mu Xiang, adding Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) and Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum). For diarrhea, double the dose of Bai Zhu, adding Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), and Lian Rou (Nelumbinis Semen). For hematochezia, add Sheng Di Huang, Bai Shao, Mai Dong, and Wu Wei Zi. For severe blood heat, add Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix). For blood deficiency heat and afternoon tidal fever, add Di Dong (Sheng Di Huang and Mai Dong), while retaining or removing Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Mu Xiang based on symptoms. If chills and fever resembling malaria occur due to Liver channel Blood deficiency, Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with modifications is appropriate. If fever occurs due to Kidney Yin deficiency, Bao Yin Jian (Preserve the Yin Decoction) or Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) are suitable. Menstruation arriving early indicates blood heat; if the color is purple-black, heat is severe, add Er Di, Bai Shao, Wu Wei Zi, and Mai Dong. For severe heat, add Gui Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) and Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), while retaining or removing Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Mu Xiang based on symptoms. Menstruation arriving late indicates blood deficiency; if the color is pale, deficiency is severe, double the dose of Dang Gui, add Di Shao (Sheng Di Huang and Bai Shao), Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus), Mi Jiao (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), and Gui Jia, and concurrently take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Zuo Gui Wan (Left Restoring Pill). Irregular menstruation indicates chaotic Qi; treat the deficiency according to the above methods, adding Si Zhi Xiang Fu (Four-Processed Cyperi Rhizoma). (Xiang Fu is the commander of Qi disorders and the general of gynecology. Soak with Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) for two nights, divide into four parts: one part stir-fried after salt water soak, one part wine-fried after wine soak, one part child's urine-fried, one part human milk-fried.) For amenorrhea due to Heart-Spleen deficiency, double Dang Gui, add Di and Shao. If due to excess fire, Yin deficiency, and blood depletion, combine Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Zuo Gui Wan, adding Bai Ren (Bai Zi Ren), Ze Lan (Lycopus Herba), Mai Dong, and Bai Shao. For conditions due to Qi and Blood stagnation or phlegm obstruction in obese individuals, treat separately after careful consideration. For metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, add Di Shao, Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi, Yu Rou (Shan Zhu Yu), Gui Jia, and Xue Yu Tan (Hominis Calcinatus). Adding Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus) to this formula creates Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Gui Pi Decoction).

This formula tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, and calms the Spirit; it acts on the Heart, Spleen, and Liver channels, and was created by Yan Yonghe of the Song Dynasty. The *Neijing* states that "diseases of the Two Yangs originate in the Heart and Spleen," involving difficulties in expressing hidden emotions (referring to unspoken distress or sexual dysfunction), which are disorders of the Yang pathway. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, responsible for transforming Ying and Wei and moistening the Zong Jin (converging sinews). As the classics state: "The anterior yin is where the Zong Jin gather, the confluence of the Taiyang and Yangming." When the Stomach is diseased, it loses the source for generating Jing and Blood, leading to Yang decline and scanty Jing; in women, this manifests as amenorrhea. It is also stated: "If it transmits as Wind Consumption, or if it transmits as Breath Accumulation, death is inevitable." When the Stomach is diseased and the condition persists, it transmits and changes; Wood overacts on Earth, wind pathogen causes emaciation, and Stomach disease leads to Lung malnourishment, causing rapid breathing. Qi exhausts at the upper body due to Jing depletion below, failing the Five Zang organs, hence death is inevitable. Therefore, treatment should begin as soon as the disease shows signs. The original formula lacked Yuan Zhi and Dang Gui; Xue added them to treat Blood deficiency, and further added Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) and Shan Zhi to treat blood heat, thereby activating the principle of Yang generating Yin. With flexible application, it addresses various symptoms with miraculous efficacy. Zhao stated that treating blood disorders requires medication according to the Three Channels: the Heart generates Blood, the Spleen controls Blood, and the Liver stores Blood. Gui Pi Tang treats the Liver to tonify the Heart, and the Heart to tonify the Spleen, following what is stored and generated to adhere to what is controlled. This is known as "treating the second organ away," with the intent focusing on blood-level herbs. Later practitioners did not understand this, making arbitrary modifications and losing its true meaning. Even those with slight knowledge only believed it treated blood via the Spleen, mixing in warming, aromatic, dry, and Yin-consuming agents, obscuring the intentions of Yan and Xue. Gao Gugeng, familiar with Zhao's arguments, uniquely grasped the subtleties, stating that Mu Xiang's aroma enters the Spleen first; even if intended to return Blood to the Spleen, this method of exhaling Blood to its vessel is flawed because its aromatic dryness moves Liver Fire and dries Essence and Fluids. Thus, he often removed Mu Xiang and added Bai Shao to retrieve dispersed Yin. Moreover, when Heart Blood is deficient, Fire attacks Metal; Bai Zhu is drying and harsh, potentially increasing coughing; with Shao Yao, the Taiyin serves to nourish Ying. Only in cases of Spleen deficiency diarrhea is Mu Xiang retained to awaken the Spleen; in cases of Spleen deficiency-cold, Gui and Fu are added to tonify Yang. Otherwise, the herbs entering the Heart, Liver, and Spleen channels are sweet, neutral, clear, and moistening. I believe that for irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, metrorrhagia, and hematochezia, modifications of this formula are mostly suitable. For vomiting blood, if indeed due to Qi deficiency failing to control, presenting with sallow-white complexion lacking spirit, faint speech and fatigue, thin and irregular Spleen-Stomach, and weak non-rapid six pulses, this formula can also be used. However, few suffer from Qi deficiency bleeding. That is, when overthinking damages the Heart, at the threshold of labor becoming consumptive, without visible Kidney Yin deficiency symptoms but with Spleen deficiency signs or loose stools, this formula is appropriate. If internal heat and bone-steaming have become consumptive disease, strengthening Water and nourishing Yin is essential; even with poor appetite and loose stools, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Bai Zhu, being Yang-assisting, are not suitable. If physical labor is combined with mental exertion, both Heart and Spleen are injured, presenting with the aforementioned symptoms but without Lung-Kidney Yin deficiency diseases, this formula with modifications can be used. However, fatigue damaging the Spleen mostly injures the Yin aspect of the Spleen. Thus, the classics state: "Yin deficiency generates internal heat; due to fatigue, form and Qi decline, Grain Qi is not abundant, Upper Jiao does not move, Upper Wan is blocked, Stomach Qi becomes hot, hot Qi steams the chest, hence internal heat." In such cases, tonifying Spleen-Stomach Yin is appropriate. This excessive labor causes the harmonious Yang Qi to hyperactivate and transform into fire; fire prosperity leads to Yin deficiency internal heat, but this is not the difficult-to-treat internal heat generated by true Yin deficiency due to sexual exhaustion. It is also stated: "Due to long journeys and fatigue, encountering great heat and thirst, thirst causes Yang Qi to invade internally; invasion causes heat to reside in the Kidney. The Kidney is a Water organ. Now Water cannot overcome Fire, so bones wither and Marrow empties." Long journeys and fatigue inevitably damage bones; encountering great heat, whether from weather or internal heat due to insufficient Yin, fire prosperity and Water deficit lead to withered bones and empty Marrow, and Kidney deficiency symptoms will appear. This results from excessive sexual desire normally, rendering the body unable to withstand labor; urgently, strengthening Water and nourishing Yin is primary, and this is also not suitable for this formula.
