From 1956 to 1957. In March and April of 1956, Mr. Yu Wu Yan's entire family relocated from Shanghai to Beijing. Lu Zhijun, the first president of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, met with Mr. Yu to discuss work matters, instructing him to co-head the Editorial Review Office (renamed the Traditional Chinese Medicine Literature Research Office several years later) together with Mr. Yu Daoji. The office members included Mr. Chen Suseng from Shanghai, Mr. Xie Zhongmo from Zhejiang, and Mr. Geng Jianting from Yangzhou.
From the summer of 1956 to the autumn of 1957, Mr. Yu mainly participated in the review and revision of nine national TCM textbooks compiled after the founding of the People's Republic of China, pouring his heart into improving the quality of these textbooks. He took particular responsibility for reviewing and revising three specific textbooks: *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases), *Jinkui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet), and *Zhongyi Waike Xue* (TCM Surgery). This laid an academic foundation for textbook compilation at various TCM colleges and universities. At that time, he was also invited to serve as one of the main lecturers for courses such as *Jinkui Yaolue* in the National First Western Doctors Learning TCM Study Class organized by the Ministry of Health.
In October 1956, to help his son, Yu Ying'ao, achieve "advanced proficiency in his specialized field" based on his systematic study of TCM within the Western medical system, Mr. Yu proposed that he become a disciple of Mr. Qin Bowei, a colleague and close friend (who was then serving as a TCM Consultant to the Ministry of Health). Mr. Qin happily accepted this proposal. Several years later, the teacher and student collaborated to compile and revise *Neijing Leizheng* (Classified Syndromes of the Inner Canon), which was published.
In 1958, during the second year following the nationwide "Anti-Rightist Campaign," Mr. Yu was transferred from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences to teach at the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine due to alleged "right-wing remarks." By then, he had already suffered from hypertension and his physical condition was poor, resulting in few teaching hours.
From 1959 to 1962, Mr. Yu participated in the compilation and design of the "Ten Classic Medical Works" at the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, due to his hypertension, he did not perform much actual work. Additionally, over several years, he undertook some medical treatment and consultation duties for central government leaders.
In 1963, on September 6th of that year, Mr. Yu suddenly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was urgently sent to the Internal Medicine Department of Dongzhimen Hospital affiliated with the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine for rescue efforts. Due to the large volume of bleeding, he passed away on September 7th at the age of 63.
Postscript: Mr. Yu Wu Yan practiced medicine for 45 years, making significant contributions to TCM clinical practice, teaching, and academic research. Beyond his medical career, Mr. Yu had profound research interests in literature and historiography, particularly regarding the *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*) and the *Book of Han* (*Hanshu*). He had intended to write monographs on these topics but died prematurely, leaving his wishes unfulfilled. Mr. Yu loved reciting poetry throughout his life. He compiled hundreds of poems written before and after the founding of the PRC into eight small volumes titled *Yu'an Shicao* (Poetry Drafts of the Ignorant Studio) (self-printed edition), distributing them to relatives, friends, colleagues, and students.
Having engaged in TCM teaching for over 30 years, his students were spread across the nation. Among them, figures such as He Ren, Yan Dexin, Xue Meng, Cao Xiangping, Yuan Zhengang, Pei Shen, Pang Panchi, Dong Ping, Zhang Hongxiang, and Wu Junyu became famous doctors with widespread influence. His sons, Yu Qing'ao and Yu Ying'ao, and his daughters, Yu Zhujun and Yu Huijun, also inherited his profession.
