Among all sores, Ding poison (Ding carbuncle) is the most severe and kills fastest. Ancient texts state: There are thirteen types of Ding, each different; if the thirty-six Ding conditions reach their full count, they are incurable. Some die before reaching the full count due to the dispersion of toxic vapors. If it is smallpox toxin infecting a person, appearing on the head, face, or all over the body, it does not belong to this category. In children, it is often caused by the nursing mother consuming toxic substances, the child suddenly ingesting dietary toxins, or contracting abnormal Qi of the four seasons. The sores mostly appear on the head, face, and limbs, with varying colors and shapes: some resemble small sores, others blisters; symptoms include pain, itching, numbness, and insensitivity. External signs include alternating chills and fever, vomiting, nausea, and limb stiffness. Generally, one must distinguish whether the pathogen is in the exterior or interior, urgently employing Garlic-Separated Moxibustion (Ge Suan Jiu) and detoxifying formulas. If consciousness is lost and the jaw is clenched, urgently administer Duoming Dan (Life-Rescuing Pill) powder mixed with warm wine for灌服 (forced administration). If cold/raw foods are consumed or cold water is used for washing, mild cases become difficult to cure, and severe cases become untreatable. When occurring on both feet, red threads often extend to the navel; on both hands, to the heart region; inside the lips and mouth, into the throat. Urgently puncture with a needle to release evil blood and drain the toxin, ensuring safety. In remote areas where medicines cannot easily reach the lesion, only moxibustion has the power to revive the dying; using harsh and potent drugs would hasten death. Children have tender skin and cannot express pain. For moxibustion, slice garlic thinly and place it on the skin, hollowing it slightly in the center. Place the moxa cone on the garlic and burn it. First test the temperature on an adult's arm to ensure comfort, then move it to the sore. Prepare another moxa cone as before to swap when necessary, avoiding interruption.
Jin Wenyе's son from Biling, nearly one year old, developed a Ding on his upper lip. I prescribed Huoming Yin (Living Death Decoction), administered to both mother and child, and suggested Garlic-Separated Moxibustion. He refused. Seeing the swelling worsen, he reluctantly underwent several moxa cones. I advised more moxibustion was better, but he was dissuaded by others. His head and face swelled further, so he underwent over fifty moxa cones, after which the swelling gradually subsided. Meanwhile, the mother and child took Huoming Yin. The sore exuded yellow fluid, ulcerated the next day, and he survived.
A three-year-old child had two purple Dings on the hand, accompanied by chills, fever, and pain. Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Rescuing Life Decoction) cured him with half a cup. Days later, his entire arm swelled. He was treated with Garlic-Separated Moxibustion and the previous formula, resulting in recovery.
A child suffered from this condition on the foot, with vomiting, abdominal distension, and no food intake for two days. I considered using Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder). Palpating the Qi-kou pulse revealed it was large. Examining the stool showed it was sour and foul. I stated: This is food stagnation, not internal attack by sore toxin. Using Huxin San would be a mistake. Urgently administer Bahe Wan (Harmony-Preserving Pill) twice, along with Garlic-Separated Moxibustion, leading to recovery. At that time, others with similar symptoms who used Huxin San or detoxifying agents failed to survive.
A child developed this on the face, with chills, fever, and convulsions. This indicated extreme heat stirring Liver Fire. Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Detoxifying Powder) and Garlic-Separated Moxibustion stopped the convulsions and reduced the fever. Subsequently, Yigong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) led to recovery.
A child developed this on the chest. After applying cold-natured external remedies and taking detoxifying internal medicine, he experienced retching, anorexia, and sallow complexion. The Right Guan pulse was floating and rapid, but fine upon pressure. This indicated secondary injury to the Spleen and Stomach. Urgent Garlic-Separated Moxibustion and Yigong San with doubled Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber) were used. The next day, Huoming Yin was taken, leading to recovery.
A child suffering from the aforementioned condition took detoxifying herbs, resulting in vomiting and anorexia. I attributed this to secondary injury of Stomach Qi. He did not believe me and took Huxin San instead. Vomiting worsened, mental spirit became depressed and lethargic, extremities turned cold, and the pulse became minute and faint, almost imperceptible. Urgently administer Wumei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) with Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). After two doses, vomiting ceased and appetite returned. Removing Ganjiang and taking four more doses led to recovery. Huxin San consists of cold-cleared herbs, originally designed by Song dynasty physicians for those developing abscesses due to heat accumulation from cinnabar ingestion. When Stomach Qi is injured, warming and tonification are required. However, many people suffer from chest oppression, cold sensations, vomiting, and lethargy because the herb remains in the chest/diaphragm. People mistakenly attribute this to "toxic vapor attacking the heart" and indiscriminately use it, rarely without causing failure.
A child developed this on the back of the hand. Both topical and internal treatments were cold-natured. He developed abdominal distension, phlegm, wheezing, and foul-smelling diarrhea. I diagnosed secondary Spleen/Stomach injury with food stagnation. He did not believe me, continued taking sore-treatment herbs, and died.
A child developed this on the arm, with redness and swelling. Strictly using Huodu Dan (Toxin-Dissipating Pill) and Tiegu San (Iron-Hoop Powder) flattened the swelling, but the flesh became white and sunken. The next day, the color darkened, accompanied by phlegm, wheezing, and shortness of breath. I diagnosed the toxin retreating inward and declined treatment. He subsequently died.
Feilong Duoming Dan (Flying Dragon Life-Rescuing Pill): Treats sore toxins, carbuncles on the back, brain abscesses, etc.
True Toad (dried, dissolved in wine) 6 qian, Qingfen (Calomel) 6 qian, Kubaifan (Calcined Alum) 6 qian, Hanshuishi (Aqua Marina) 6 qian, Tonglu (Chalcanthite) 6 qian, Ruxiang (Frankincense) 6 qian, Moyao (Myrrh) 6 qian, Zhusha (Cinnabar) 6 qian, Woniu (Snail) 40 pieces (ground separately, optional if unavailable).
Grind all into powder, mix with Chan Su (Toad Venom) and Woniu, add a little wine to make pills the size of mung beans. Take 1-2 pills with warm wine or scallion decoction. For severe cases, use external Garlic-Separated Moxibustion.
