Symptoms of hemorrhoids may arise from congenital fetal toxins, accumulation of food due to excessive consumption of rich and greasy foods, or the mother's intake of roasted and strongly flavored foods. Swelling and pain indicate damp-heat; itching indicates wind-heat; constipation indicates excess fire; suppuration and ulceration indicate blood heat. For damp-heat, use Jiawei Huaihua San (Modified Sophora Flower Powder); for wind-heat, use Qinjiao Cangzhu Tang (Gentian and Atractylodes Decoction); for constipation, use Qingzao Tang (Moistening Dryness Decoction); for suppuration and ulceration, use Huang Tang (Astragalus Decoction - *Note: Original text says "Huang [missing character] Tang", inferred as Astragalus based on context*). For fumigation and washing, use scallion decoction, Sophora fruit, Chinese gall, and other herbs, or apply real Puhuang (Cortex Pollen) mixed with lard externally. If there are complicated symptoms, refer to the treatments in respective categories.
A child suffered from hemorrhoids with red swelling and pain. After taking Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity), the pain ceased. Subsequently, Tuoli Qinggan San (Interior-Supporting Liver-Clearing Powder) and Jiawei Huaijiao Wan (Modified Sophora Seed Pills) were administered, leading to healing.
Another child developed hemorrhoids accompanied by fever due to food stagnation. Symptoms included difficult defecation, swelling, pain, chills, fever, and occasional convulsions. This was diagnosed as spleen qi injury with liver wood overacting upon it. Initially, Baohe Wan powder (2 qian) was taken, mixed with Chaihu (Bupleurum) and Shanzhi (Gardenia) decoction. Once food stagnation resolved and convulsions stopped, Siwei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Stomach-Nourishing Pills) was given for several doses, resulting in recovery.
A twelve-year-old boy, who did not abstain from rich foods and strong wine, experienced intermittent pain, sometimes with constipation and dysuria. He was treated with Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction) and stabilized. Later, after drinking distilled liquor, his previous symptoms recurred with generalized erythema and irritability. Drinking half a cup of cold vinegar caused the redness and heat to subside completely, and swelling and pain decreased immediately.
A child presented with anal swelling and pain because the wet nurse had consumed roasted foods. Both mother and child took Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder), and the child additionally took Siwei Fei'er Wan, leading to recovery. Later, due to the wet nurse's anger causing chest and hypochondriac pain, and her frequent consumption of sugary wine, the child's illness recurred with convulsions. The mother first took Jiawei Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction) for two doses, followed by Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder). The child took Siwei Fei'er Wan and recovered.
A child with anal swelling, pain, and constipation took Rhubarb-based medicines, which exacerbated the swelling and pain, leading to concurrent deficiency syndromes. Despite this, there was an urge to attack the abscess. I stated: This is due to further injury to spleen qi. The main treatment was Yigong San (Extraordinary Assistance Powder) augmented with Shengma (Cimicifuga) and Chaihu (Bupleurum), assisted by Jiawei Huaijiao Wan. Swelling and pain gradually subsided. Then, Huanglian Jiedu Tang was used to discharge pus, and Qinjiao Cangzhu Tang healed the wound.
A child with anal swelling, pain, fever, thirst, and hot breath from mouth and nose was diagnosed with excess heat in the spleen and lung meridians. Two doses of Xiehuang San (Draining Yellow Powder) reduced the fever. Zhike San (Citrus Aurantium Powder) stopped the pain, and Jinyinhua San (Honeysuckle Powder) eliminated swelling and pain. Later, after the mother ate rich foods, the child's condition relapsed. The mother took Qingwei San, resolving the swelling and pain.
A child accidentally ingested arsenolite (Xinshi), presenting with generalized redness, vomiting, irritability, thirst, anal swelling and pain, constipation, and a desire for cold drinks. One cup of cold rice vinegar was administered, causing the redness to vanish instantly and pain to cease. Huanglian Jiedu Tang and Jinyinhua (Honeysuckle) cured the condition.
A child with intermittent hemorrhoid swelling and pain recovered after taking Jiawei Huaijiao Wan. At age fourteen, the condition relapsed with fever, fatigue, and hard, swollen anus. Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pills) and Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) were used, gradually reducing hardness and swelling and restoring qi and blood. Medication was occasionally paused, and due to irregular labor, symptoms recurred but improved with the previous prescriptions. After marriage, anal swelling ulcerated and spread to the buttocks. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Enriching Decoction) and Dihuang Wan were used, healing the buttock area. Alternative corrosive treatments might reduce hard nodules but damage yuan qi and prevent wound closure. Using Bazhen Tang and Dihuang Wan led to healing within two months. However, failure to observe dietary restrictions and continued toxic attacks caused repeated relapses, gradual depletion of yuan qi, and eventual death. As the ancients said: Being good at taking medicine is inferior to being good at self-care. Truly so!
