Fan Hua Chuang (Flower-Flipping Ulcer) is a condition caused by wind-cold pathogens invading the affected area after an ulcer has ruptured, or due to liver fire causing blood dryness and generating wind, or even from the wet nurse's liver fire generating wind. This inevitably leads to tissue protruding from the wound opening, resembling mushrooms or fingers, varying in size and length. If caused by wind pathogen invasion, first use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome). If caused by wind-cold stagnation, first use Shixuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder) with Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome). If caused by the child's own liver fire generating wind, first use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome). If caused by the wet nurse's liver fire generating wind, first use Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), followed by Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with Loulu (Euphorbia Fissurana Root) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome). For cases of wind pathogen invasion, apply Dou Chi Bing (Fermented Soybean Cake) externally. For wind-cold stagnation, apply Cong Yun Method (Scallion Moxibustion/Warming Therapy) externally, and further protect the wound with Taiyi Gao (Great Unity Plaster). If the protruding tissue does not subside, apply Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster). If the wound fails to heal accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, it indicates deficiency of Yuan Qi (Primal Qi); use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If there is afternoon tidal fever and internal heat, it indicates deficiency of both Qi and Blood; use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), doubling the dosage of Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). If appetite is poor and digestion is difficult, it indicates Spleen Qi deficiency; use Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder). If there is lack of desire for food, irregular bowel movements, emaciation, and clear white urine, this involves Liver-Spleen Gan Syndrome (Childhood Malnutrition); use Jiuwei Lushan Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Pill) to clear Liver Fire, and Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder) to tonify Spleen Qi. Externally, continue with warming therapy.
A child suffered from an abscess on the outer side of the leg. The wound was sunken and black, with tissue protruding like a mushroom, and the child refused food for a long time. This indicated deficiency of Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) and stagnation of cold pathogens in the affected area. Tenxuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder) with Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) and Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), along with Fuzi Bing (Aconite Cake), were applied. The affected area gradually turned red, then switched to Cong Yun Method (Scallion Warming Therapy) until it turned white. This indicated that cold pathogens had dispersed but Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) remained deficient, allowing True Qi to emerge. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster) were used, resulting in recovery.
A child suffered from an abscess on the arm. The wound was pale with protruding, flipping tissue, resembling mushrooms or fingers. Corrosive medicines were used to remove the tissue, but it recurred. It was considered Lung-Liver Qi deficiency. First, Yiqi Tang (Qi-Supplementing Decoction) was used, followed by Tuoli San (Interior-Supporting Powder) and Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster), leading to recovery.
A woman suffered from an abscess between her ribs. The wound was red with tissue protruding like a mushroom, accompanied by alternating chills and fever similar to malaria. This was caused by Liver channel blood dryness generating wind. Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) was used first, followed by Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) and Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster), leading to recovery.
A child suffered from this condition. The wound was red, swollen, painful, and intermittently discharged bloody pus. This indicated heat in the Liver channel Blood level. Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root, Fresh) was administered for four doses. Subsequently, Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root, Fresh) replaced Shu Dihuang (Rehmannia Glutinosa Root, Prepared). After more than a month, blood heat gradually subsided. Then, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) and Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster) reduced the protruding tissue. Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction) restored Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), and Tuoli San (Interior-Supporting Powder) healed the wound.
A child suffered from Tianshe Du (Snake Poison/Cellulitis). After pus discharge, the fingers swelled and turned dark. The wound had protruding tissue, and the back of the hand was diffusely swollen but not red. There was poor appetite, loose stools, aversion to cold, and fever. Only detoxifying and Qi-moving medicines were used. It was reasoned that Spleen-Stomach weakness prevented proper digestion, muscle growth, and defense against external wind pathogens, rather than being solely due to the toxin itself. Yiqi Tang (Qi-Supplementing Decoction) was taken in the morning, and Yigong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder) in the evening. After over two months, symptoms gradually improved. Later, excessive eating led to vomiting and diarrhea. The affected area became non-vital and exuded clear fluid. Yigong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder), Cong Yun Method (Scallion Warming Therapy), and Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster) led to recovery.
A woman suffered from an arm abscess. After rupture, tissue protruded like a mushroom. Toxic medicines were used for cauterization, worsening the protrusion. She presented with a blueish complexion, alternating chills and fever, and irregular menstruation. This indicated Liver channel blood dryness generating wind and Spleen Qi deficiency failing to generate flesh. Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder) were used for over two months, followed by Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) and Tuoli San (Interior-Supporting Powder), leading to recovery.
A child suffered from the aforementioned condition. Medicines corroded the tissue, but the wound failed to heal. Morning aversion to cold and evening fever occurred. It was reasoned that this was due to joint deficiency of Qi and Blood. The method should be to regulate and tonify the Spleen and Stomach, so that Qi and Blood would naturally generate and the wound would heal. The patient did not heed this advice, continued with attacking treatments, and died.
A fifteen-year-old woman suffered from the aforementioned condition. Corroded tissue regrew. Her complexion was blueish or reddish. It was reasoned that this was due to reckless movement of Wind-Fire in the Liver and Gallbladder channels. Liver Blood is Yin and Water; Liver Qi is Yang and Fire. One should nourish Kidney Water and tonify Liver Blood to extinguish Fire and Wind naturally. The patient did not believe this and used wind-dispelling agents, causing blood dryness and reckless bleeding, leading to death from uncontrollable hemorrhage from the wound.
Lili Gao (Veratrum Plaster): Treats protruding tissue at the wound opening or tissue growing two to three cun long.
Lili (Veratri Viridis Rhizoma, amount unspecified).
Grind into powder. Mix with fresh pig lard by rubbing and apply to the protruding tissue.
