Chao Yuanfang stated: Pediatric *Ba* disease (a historical term for a specific type of infantile illness often associated with maternal factors or supernatural beliefs in ancient texts) is caused by spiritual disturbances affecting the fetus during pregnancy. The symptoms include mild diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, hair standing on end with restlessness, and low mood. Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) is appropriate. Additionally, if an infant who has not yet been weaned drinks milk from a mother who is pregnant again, the child may become emaciated with visible bones, develop yellowish complexion and high fever, and experience irregular bowel movements. This condition is named "Er" disease (infant disease related to maternal pregnancy), also known as *Ba* disease. It should be treated with Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pill) to purge accumulation, followed by Yihuang San (Yellow-Protecting Powder) to tonify the spleen and stomach. The infant should be weaned and continue taking Xiaorou Wan (Digestive Milk Pill) and Yigong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder). If a pregnant woman holds another person's child, it can also cause this syndrome. Zhang Yuansu (Haihang) stated: *Ba* disease occurs when a mother is pregnant and the infant drinks her milk, resulting in symptoms similar to malaria or dysentery, abdominal distension, and fluctuating severity. Proximity to others may also induce it. In the north, people wear feathers from the Lark bird (*Bolao*), claiming it cures the disease. I believe: The aforementioned conditions are caused by pathogenic invasion, so Zishuang Wan is used to purge; if vital qi is damaged leading to vomiting and diarrhea, treatment should follow the specific symptoms.

Ms. Tang stated: Cold diarrhea results from deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach, leading to failure to digest water and grain. Qian Yi (Qian Zhongyang) stated: If an infant cannot take milk, passes brown stool, and has a cold body lacking yang, treat with modified Yihuang San. If the stool is clear and white, and there is no thirst or irritability, it is cold accumulation diarrhea, primarily treated with Lizhong Tang. If caused by inhaling wind-cold through the mouth and nose, or consuming raw/cold foods damaging the spleen and stomach, first use Lizhong Tang, then Yigong San. If Mingmen Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life) is deficient and fails to warm and steam the middle jiao, causing spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, use Yihuang San and Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). For spleen-stomach weakness, use Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder). For sinking of spleen qi, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang. For deficiency-cold of spleen qi, (treatment varies), physicians should examine carefully.
Clinical Cases
A child presented with green-white diarrhea, cold hands and feet, blueish complexion, and occasional hiccups. I administered Renshen Lizhong Tang (Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction). Abdominal pain worsened. I continued the previous formula adding Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). After two doses, symptoms eased slightly. Then, Wumei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) with Muxiang was used, leading to gradual recovery. Finally, Wumei Yigong San with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) was used for regulation until full recovery.
A child suffered from abdominal pain with diarrhea, undigested food in stool, and a heavy sensation in the lower abdomen. Buzhong Yiqi Tang with Ganjiang was ground into powder. One qian was taken each time, mixed with rice water, two to three times daily. After more than ten days, slight improvement occurred. Then, Wumei Yigong San powder mixed with rice water was taken, leading to gradual recovery over ten days. Finally, Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) completed the cure.
A child had diarrhea with abdominal pain, cold limbs, cyanotic lips, and a black forehead. I diagnosed this as Cold Water insulting Earth (Kidney Water overacting on Spleen Earth). Yihuang San stopped the pain. Then, Liu Junzi Tang with Ganjiang and Loulu (Asparagi Radix) were taken by both mother and child, stopping the symptoms immediately. Renshen Lizhong Tang completed the cure.
A child had chronic diarrhea accompanied by heaviness in the epigastrium, anus, and lower abdomen, edema of the four limbs, sallow complexion sometimes turning bluish, and vomiting upon taking any medicine. Examination revealed the wet nurse suffered from melancholy injuring the spleen, with loose stools. First, Buzhong Yiqi Tang, Wumei Yigong San, and Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill) were used to regulate the mother. Within two months, both mother and child recovered.
A child had diarrhea with undigested milk/food and cold fingers/toes. After taking Xiaorou Wan, diarrhea occurred immediately after feeding. I prescribed Wumei Yigong San with Muxiang, taken by both mother and child, resulting in recovery. Later, occasional twitching of the lips and mouth occurred. Yigong San with Muxiang and Goutenggou (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) was used to tonify the spleen and calm the liver, leading to recovery.
A child had diarrhea with limb convulsions, surging phlegm-saliva, cold fingers/toes, black forehead, and cyanotic lips. Wumei Yigong San with Muxiang and Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) was used to tonify Heart Fire and rescue Spleen Earth, resulting in recovery.
A fourteen-year-old child had diarrhea, heavy lower abdomen, and poor appetite. Six Junzi Tang delivering Sishen Wan was given for several doses, gradually stopping diarrhea and improving appetite. Then, Buzhong Yiqi Tang was given for several doses, alleviating the downward dragging sensation. Later, fatigue-induced fever originated from the umbilicus, worsening with hunger. Six Junzi Tang with Paojiang provided slight relief. Finally, Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang completed the cure.
Renshen Lizhong Tang
Renshen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried). Equal parts.
Take 1-2 qian per dose, decoct in water, and form honey pills. This is Renshen Lizhong Wan. Adding Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) creates Fuzi Lizhong Tang.
