[Pregnancy: Sudden Evil Invasion]
When a woman is pregnant, if she has excessive phlegm and salivation, and accidentally encounters evil influences such as spirit possession, she may suddenly suffer from abdominal pain with the fetus pressing upward. People often mistake this for Zi Xuan disease (a condition where the fetus presses against the chest and heart), but who would know that it is actually due to sudden evil invasion causing fetal instability? Generally, abnormal qi is most likely to damage the fetal source; therefore, pregnant women should absolutely avoid entering temples to burn incense or going to secluded, yin-cold places. Locations such as ancient caves and dark cliffs must not be climbed. This is because spirits and evil entities are mostly found in shrines, hiding in dark, yin-cold rock caves, which are also their places of roaming and play. Contact with these places makes one easily susceptible to infringement, so one must take deep precautions. Moreover, pregnant women often have excessive phlegm and saliva, making their eyes prone to dizziness. Once the eyes become dizzy, hallucinations may occur; this is the reason why attracting evil stems from phlegm. It is said that strange diseases often arise from phlegm, which is indeed true. The treatment method seems appropriate to focus on resolving phlegm. However, treating phlegm inevitably consumes healthy qi; if qi is deficient, phlegm is difficult to transform, and the fetal source will surely shake. One must tonify qi to generate blood, nourish blood to activate and resolve phlegm, and then add herbs that clear phlegm. In this way, qi and blood will not be depleted, and phlegm will be easily transformed.
Prescribe Xiao E An Tai Tang (Eliminate Evil and Calm Fetus Decoction).
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 liang, washed with wine), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (1 liang, stir-fried with wine), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (5 qian, stir-fried with earth), Fu Ling (Poria) (5 qian), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (1 qian), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (5 fen), Hua Fen (Radix Platycodi / Radix Bletillae - here referring to Tian Hua Fen, Radix Trichosanthis) (3 qian), Su Ye (Folium Perillae) (1 qian), Chen Xiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum) (1 qian, ground into powder).
This formula greatly tonifies qi and blood, embodying the principle that supporting righteous qi causes evil qi to eliminate itself.
Commentary: Supporting righteous qi to expel evil, the formula is extremely balanced. From this, we can see that those who use mineral drugs to resolve phlegm are merely seeking novelty and quick results, unaware that they secretly consume the body's true qi. Beware!
Verse: Why does sudden evil invade during pregnancy? Excessive phlegm meets evil spirits, causing demonic illness.
Do not step into ancient caves and dark cliffs; cold temples also attract demons.
To eliminate evil and calm the fetus, use Dang Gui and Bai Shao;
Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ren Shen, and Gan Cao.
Chen Pi, Hua Fen, Su Ye, and Chen Xiang;
Greatly tonifying qi and blood, its efficacy is high.
[Multiple Pregnancies Lost Due to Anger]
After a woman becomes pregnant, whether before the fetus takes shape or after it has formed, the fetus may inevitably miscarry. People all say this is due to deficiency of qi and blood, unable to secure the fetus. Who would know that it is actually due to an impatient temperament and excessive anger, causing Liver Fire to move violently and fail to remain still? The Liver stores blood. When the Liver is angry, it fails to store blood; when it fails to store blood, the blood is difficult to secure. Although the Liver belongs to Wood, within Wood resides the Dragon-Thunder Fire, also known as Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo). Ministerial Fire should be quiet rather than active: when quiet, it is peaceful; when active, it blazes. Moreover, the fire within Wood is easy to activate and difficult to calm. There is no day in life without movement; since there is no day without moving fire, great anger causes the fire to move even more. If the fire moves and cannot be restrained, the fire energy flies wildly, failing to generate qi and nourish the fetus, but instead consuming qi and damaging essence. When essence is damaged, the fetus has nothing to nourish upon, and inevitably descends continuously. As stated in the classics: "Mild fire generates qi, vigorous fire consumes qi," which is exactly this meaning. The treatment method should calm the fire in the Liver and benefit the qi of the waist and umbilicus, allowing qi to generate blood and blood to clear fire, thus achieving balance.
Prescribe Li Qi Xie Huo Tang (Benefit Qi and Drain Fire Decoction).
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) (3 qian), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (1 liang, stir-fried with earth), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (5 qian, steamed nine times), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (3 qian, washed with wine), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (5 qian, stir-fried with wine), Qian Shi (Semen Nelumbinis) (3 qian, stir-fried), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian, stir-fried with wine).
Decoct in water and take orally. After taking sixty doses, the fetus will no longer miscarry. Although this formula is named for benefiting qi, it essentially tonifies qi. However, if tonifying qi is not combined with herbs that drain fire, the abundant qi will cause fire to rise uncontrollably, inevitably harming the qi. Therefore, Huang Qin is added among the qi-tonifying herbs to drain fire; along with Shu Di, Dang Gui, and Bai Shao to nourish the Liver and strengthen the master of Water (Kidney Yin/Water), the blood will not become dry and the qi will harmonize. With anger subsiding and fire naturally calming, there is no need to deliberately benefit qi, yet qi will flow freely everywhere, ensuring success in all endeavors.
Commentary: The reason for not using Liver-soothing herbs for those with impatience and excessive anger is due to the presence of pregnancy. The classics state: "If the fetus is diseased, the mother is diseased; if the fetus is secure, the mother's disease heals itself." Therefore, in the field of pregnancy, the primary approach is always to tonify qi, nourish blood, and calm the fetus, so that all diseases will naturally eliminate themselves.
Verse: Why do pregnant women miscarry? It is solely due to impatience and excessive anger.
Treatment should calm the Liver and benefit the waist qi.
With smooth qi and cleared fire, the fetus naturally harmonizes.
Li Qi Xie Huo uses Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Bai Shao;
Shu Di, Dang Gui, and raw Gan Cao.
Qian Shi and Huang Qin must both be stir-fried;
Taking them frequently can calm and dissipate anger.
