During pregnancy, if there is pain in the lower abdomen, fetal restlessness (fetal movement instability), and a sensation of impending miscarriage, people only know that it is due to weakness of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel). How could they know that it is actually due to deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney? Although the Bao Tai (Uterus) is connected to the Dai Mai, the Dai Mai is essentially related to the Spleen and Kidney. When the Spleen and Kidney are deficient, the Dai Mai becomes weak, and the Bao Tai loses its capacity to function properly. Moreover, deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney in humans is either caused by excessive dietary injury or excessive sexual activity. When the Spleen and Kidney are deficient, the Dai Mai becomes tense, causing the Bao Tai to have a sensation of sinking. Then, the connection of the Bao Tai extends to the Heart and Kidney, but not to the Spleen; tonifying the Kidney should suffice, why also tonify the Spleen? However, the Spleen is the Post-Heaven (Acquired) Foundation, and the Kidney is the Pre-Heaven (Constitutional) Foundation. The Spleen cannot transform without Qi from the Pre-Heaven, and the Kidney cannot generate without Qi from the Post-Heaven. If one tonifies the Kidney without tonifying the Spleen, how can the essence of the Kidney be rapidly generated? Therefore, tonifying the Post-Heaven Spleen is precisely to tonify the Pre-Heaven Kidney; simultaneously tonifying both the Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven Spleen and Kidney is precisely to consolidate the Qi and Blood of the Bao Tai. Can the Spleen and Kidney fail to be tonified equally?

The formula used is Andian Er Tian Tang (Stabilize and Secure Two Heavens Decoction): Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, remove rhizome), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang, steamed nine times), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang, stir-fried with soil), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian, stir-fried), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus, 5 qian, steamed, remove seeds), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 3 qian, stir-fried until black), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, 2 qian), Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen, 5 qian, stir-fried, remove skin). Decoct in water and drink. After taking one dose, the pain stops; after two doses, the fetus is stabilized. Fetal restlessness is a syndrome of double deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney. Without using large doses of Yin- and Yang-tonifying herbs such as Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Shu Di Huang, it is impossible to reverse the condition in an instant. People often fear using Ren Shen and Bai Zhu or use them in small amounts, hoping to achieve success easily, which results in few effective cases. The brilliance of this formula lies in the heavy dosage.

Marginal Note: For one liang of Ren Shen, if the patient is weak, Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) can be substituted. If Shangdang Dang Shen is unavailable, tender Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) can be used. The Ren Shen mentioned in ancient texts refers to the current Shangdang Dang Shen. Obtaining genuine Taibai Dang Shen is sufficient; there is no need to substitute with Huang Qi, nor is it correct to rigidly insist that Ren Shen must be Liaoshen or Lishen. Identified by Xingchu.
