If a pregnant woman experiences aversion to cold and abdominal pain, leading to miscarriage, people only know that the lower jiao (Lower Burner) is too cold, but who knows that this is due to Qi deficiency failing to secure the fetus! Human life originates from Fire and is also nourished by Fire. Without sufficient Qi, when Qi is vigorous, Fire is vigorous; when Qi declines, Fire declines. The reason one can maintain pregnancy is receiving the True Fire of the parents' congenital essence. This congenital True Fire is formed by the congenital True Qi. Therefore, the fetus is formed by Qi and secured by Qi; when Qi is vigorous, the fetus is firm; when Qi declines, the fetus falls. As the fetus grows day by day, the mother's Qi declines day by day, how could it not miscarry! Moreover, if external Cold pathogen invades, the internal Fire Qi becomes even more微弱 (weak); with weak Fire Qi, there is insufficient resource for nourishment and growth; this is why the fetus inevitably miscarries. If at the time of abdominal pain, one immediately uses herbs like Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) to tonify Qi and dispel Cold, the pain would stop and the fetus would be safe. Unfortunately, people are constrained by pregnancy medication taboos and dare not use them, resulting in miscarriage, leaving only a trace of Qi remaining. If Qi is not urgently rescued, what other method is there?
Prescription: Huang Qi Bu Qi Tang (Astragalus Qi-Tonifying Decoction).
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 2 liang, raw), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 5 fen, bark removed, powdered), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, wine-washed).
Decoct in water and take orally. Five doses will cure it. If one assumes it is merely Cold and heavily uses acrid-hot herbs without tonifying Qi and Blood, fearing excessive dryness-heat might lead to Yang collapse and critical danger.
Commentary: Rou Gui must be high quality. If none is available, Pao Jiang (Charred Ginger Rhizome) can be substituted, using 1 qian or 2 qian; do not use only 5 fen.
Song Verse: Pregnant women with abdominal pain and aversion to cold, miscarriage is caused by Qi deficiency being prominent.
When Qi is vigorous, the fetus is firm; when Qi declines, the fetus falls; this principle is subtle and requires careful contemplation.
Huang Qi tonifies Qi and should be used raw; two liang of Huang Qi and one liang of Dang Gui.
Rou Gui 5 fen decocted together; five doses bring complete recovery with extraordinary effect.
After a pregnant woman suffers great anger, sudden abdominal pain and hemoptysis occur, leading to miscarriage; and after miscarriage, the abdominal pain does not cease. People assume it is because the Liver Fire has not subsided, but who knows that this is due to Blood failing to return to its vessels! The Liver stores Blood. Great anger causes Blood to fail to be stored, leading to hemorrhage, but why does miscarriage accompany hemorrhage? One does not realize that the nature of the Liver is most urgent/irritable. When the "blood gate" does not close, Blood rushes directly into the Bao Tuo (uterus/fetal sac). The ligament of the Bao Tuo connects between the Heart and Kidney. The rushing Liver Blood must sever the pathway between the Heart and Kidney; because this pathway is severed, the Bao Tuo loses the nourishment of Water and Fire, hence the miscarriage. Since the fetus has miscarried but abdominal pain remains, it is because the Heart and Kidney have not reconnected, and there is no way to restore the connection. They mutually injure the Liver Qi; attempting to return to the Heart but the Heart does not accept it, attempting to return to the Kidney but the Kidney does not receive it. Thus, Blood remains unsettled and pain continues unceasingly. The treatment method should guide the Liver's Blood back into the Liver, and abdominal pain will naturally stop. However, merely guiding Liver Blood without soothing Liver Qi means Qi rebellion will not easily reverse, and thus Blood rebellion will not easily return.
Prescription: Yin Qi Gui Xue Tang (Qi-Guiding-to-Blood Decoction).
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian, wine-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian, wine-washed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian, earth-fried), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Hei Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, charred, 3 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 3 qian), Jiang Tan (Zingiberis Rhizoma Carbonisatum, 5 fen), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 5 fen, wine-fried), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 3 qian, heart removed), Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix, 1 qian, vinegar-fried).
Decoct in water and take orally. This prescription is named "Guiding Qi," but essentially it guides Blood; guiding Blood is also guiding Qi. When Qi returns to the interior of the Liver, Blood also returns to the interior of the Liver; with both Qi and Blood returning, abdominal pain stops naturally.
Commentary: Bai Shao is contraindicated postpartum due to its sour-cold nature. Using 5 qian of Bai Shao after miscarriage is only suitable for those born in the "Upper Yuan" period; for those born in the "Lower Yuan" period, it must absolutely not be used. If unavoidable, stir-fry Bai Shao until carbonized and use 3 qian. Other herbs are prepared according to this method.
Song Verse: Pregnant woman's great anger opens the blood gate, her blood rushes directly into the fetal sac.
The fetal sac's connection links Heart and Kidney, blockage of Heart-Kidney pathway leads to miscarriage.
Yin Qi Gui Xue uses Bai Shao and Dang Gui, Bai Zhu, Mai Dong, Dan Pi, Jing Jie Sui.
Jiang Tan, Yu Jin, Xiang Fu, Gan Cao; decoct and take, Qi returns and Blood also returns.
