There is a woman whose menstruation occurs once every few months. She considers this her normal state, with no variation in being early or late, nor any difference in the amount of flow. People find it strange, yet do not realize that it is not abnormal. This is because she has no disease and both Qi (vital energy) and Blood are neither deficient nor excessive. However, there are many people who shorten their lifespan due to excessive sexual desire, so it is necessary to establish a therapeutic formula to assist them. The formula is named Zhuxian Dan (Assist Immortal Pill).
Bai Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 3 qian, stir-fried with soil), Baishao (White Peony Root, 3 qian, stir-fried with wine), Shanyao (Dioscorea Opposita Rhizome, 3 qian, stir-fried), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, 2 qian, stir-fried with wine), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark, 1 qian, stir-fried until black), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian).
Decoct with river water and take orally. After four doses, if the condition remains as before (i.e., still occurring once every few months), do not continue taking it. Within this formula's mild tonification, there is profound logic. It strengthens the Spleen and benefits the Kidney without causing stagnation; it resolves depression and clears phlegm without causing leakage; it does not damage natural Qi and Blood. This is the great method for regulating menstruation. How can one use other drugs to expect the promotion of menstruation?
Marginal Note: I have seen a woman who had menstruation once a year, healthy and free from illness. After becoming pregnant, she continued to menstruate monthly, sometimes stopping at five or seven months. The boys born all grew up to adulthood. Everyone found this strange. Is it perhaps due to "immortal bones"? Or is it the unpredictable nature of Creation?
Verse: Menstruation occurring once every few months indicates that this woman possesses innate "immortal" constitution.
Although those born with an immortal constitution exist, do they never suffer damage to their innate endowment due to desires?
In Zhuxian Dan, Poria and Tangerine Peel are decocted together; White Peony, Atractylodes, and Cuscuta are linked.
With Dioscorea, Eucommia, and Licorice, decocted in river water for four doses, recovery is achieved.
There is a woman over fifty years old, or even sixty or seventy, who suddenly begins to menstruate. Some discharge purple blood clots, while others experience bleeding resembling red leukorrhea. Some say that menstruation in an elderly woman is a sign of rejuvenation ("returning to youth"). Who knows that this is actually the beginning of a uterine hemorrhage (Xue Beng)? When a woman passes the age of seven times seven (49 years), Tian Gui (the substance governing menstruation and reproductive capacity) has exhausted itself. Without taking medicines to nourish Yin and tonify Yang, how can Essence be full enough to transform into menstrual blood, just like in young women? However, when menstruation should not occur but does, it is due to the Liver failing to store Blood and the Spleen failing to control Blood. If not caused by excessive loss of Essence stirring up the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), then it is caused by severe Qi stagnation triggering the Flaming Fire (Longlei Zhi Yan). When these two fires interact and flare up, Blood rushes forth. It resembles menstruation but is not true menstruation. For such symptoms, unless we greatly tonify the Qi and Blood of the Liver and Spleen, how can the Blood stop abruptly?
The formula used is Anlao Tang (Elderly Peaceful Decoction).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang, raw), Da Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang, steamed nine times), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 qian, stir-fried with soil), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian, washed with wine), Shanyurou (Corni Fructus, 5 qian, steamed), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 1 qian, stir-fried with clam powder), Hei Jiesui (Charred Schizonepeta Spica, 1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 0.5 qian, stir-fried with wine), Mu'er Tan (Charred Wood Ear, 1 qian).
Decoct with water and take orally. Symptoms decrease after one dose, decrease further after two doses, completely subside after four doses, and resolve after ten doses. This formula tonifies the Qi of the Liver and Spleen. When Qi is sufficient, it naturally generates Blood and controls Blood. Particularly wonderful is its great benefit to Kidney Water. When Kidney Water is sufficient, Liver Qi naturally becomes smooth; when Liver Qi is smooth, the Spleen receives nourishment. The Liver stores Blood, and the Spleen controls it. How could there be leakage? Why worry about uterine hemorrhage?
Marginal Note: Adding 1 qian of Charred Guanzhong (Dryopteridis Crassirhizomatis Rhizoma), ground into fine powder, and taken mixed with the decoction is especially effective.
Verse: Menstruation in old age is actually hemorrhage; the storing and controlling power of the Liver and Spleen is insufficient.
Treatment requires greatly tonifying the Qi of the Liver and Spleen; when Qi is sufficient, it controls Blood and stops metrorrhagia and metrostaxis.
In Anlao Tang, Ginseng and Astragalus are added; Prepared Rehmannia, Atractylodes, Angelica, and Chinese Yam are companions.
Donkey-hide Gelatin, Schizonepeta, Licorice, Cyperi Rhizoma, and Charred Wood Ear make the effects of soothing the Liver and nourishing the Spleen even more magnificent.
