Women who are naturally tranquil and indifferent may find their bodies comfortable when food intake is small, but feel uncomfortable when intake increases, sometimes experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, fullness in the chest and diaphragm, and long-term infertility. People often attribute this to weak congenital endowment, little knowing that it is actually due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach (Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold). The deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach originates from the deficiency-cold of the Heart and Kidney. Indeed, the Earth of the Stomach cannot be generated without the Fire of the Heart, and the Earth of the Spleen cannot be transformed without the Fire of the Kidney. When the Fire of the Heart and Kidney declines, the Spleen and Stomach lose their power of generation and transformation, and thus cannot digest water and grain to transform them into essence and fluids. Since they cannot transform the essence and fluids of water and grain, there will naturally be no body fluids to irrigate and nourish the conception palace (Uterus). It is impossible for the conception palace to possess warm qi to nourish the embryo. Even if conception occurs, due to the weakness of the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), miscarriage is inevitable. This is the fault of Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, hence the failure to conceive offspring. Should not the treatment urgently focus on warming and tonifying the Spleen and Stomach? However, the "mother" of the Spleen lies originally in the Mingmen (Gate of Life) of the Kidney, and the "mother" of the Stomach lies originally in the Pericardium (Xin Bao) of the Heart. To warm and tonify the Spleen and Stomach, one must necessarily tonify the fire of these two meridians. For when the mother is prosperous, the son will certainly not be weak; when the mother is hot, the son will certainly not be cold. This is the principle of treating the mother when the child is diseased.

The formula used is Wendu Yulin Tang (Warming Earth to Nurture the Unicorn Decoction).
Ingredients: Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed, soaked in wine); Fu Pen Zi (Rubus Chingii Fructus, 1 liang, soaked in wine and steamed); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian, stir-fried with soil); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian); Huai Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Polystachyae Rhizoma, 5 qian, stir-fried); Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 1 qian, stir-fried).
Decoct in water and take orally. Conception can be achieved within one month. The brilliance of this formula lies in its ability to warm and tonify the Spleen and Stomach while simultaneously supplementing the fire of the Mingmen and Pericardium. With few ingredients, it treats four meridians concurrently. When the fire of the Mingmen and Pericardium is vigorous, the Spleen and Stomach have no fear of cold. Mother and son care for each other, and the family lives in harmony. Naturally, food intake increases and digestion improves, Qi and Blood become abundant and capable of bearing the fetus, the Dai Mai becomes strong, and there is no need to worry about miscarriage. How could there be a failure to conceive offspring?

Commentary: Infertility due to low food intake differs from chest fullness and loss of appetite. The former focuses on tonifying the Qi of the Kidney, while the latter focuses on tonifying the fire of the Mingmen and Pericardium. Although the number of ingredients is small, the subtlety of the Jun (Monarch), Chen (Minister), Zuo (Assistant), and Shi (Envoy) roles should be carefully studied.
