Blood is never without redness; why is it named "white blood"? It is unknown that in patients with chronic illness, the expectorated phlegm consists entirely of white froth, which is termed "white blood." Why is white froth called "white blood"? Because its appearance resembles crab saliva, containing no putrid phlegm, but is actually blood rather than phlegm. If the expectorated froth is exposed under starlight overnight, it will inevitably turn red. This froth originates from the Kidney (Shen), where Kidney Fire (Shen Huo) boils up in the throat, necessitating its expulsion. Although it appears as white froth, it is essentially the essence (Jing) of the Kidney, not merely blood. If not treated promptly, the white froth will transform into green phlegm, at which point nothing can be done. The prescription is as follows: Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang, 1 liang), Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu, 5 qian), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao, 5 qian), Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi, 2 qian), Poria (Fu Ling, 5 qian), Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie, 2 qian), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong, 1 liang), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally, daily.
Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi, 0.7 fen, stir-fried until black), Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi, 0.5 fen, stir-fried until black), True Polygonum Cattleyanum Seed (Pu Huang, 1.2 qian, stir-fried until black), Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuan Xiong, 1 qian, washed with wine), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang, 1 qian, washed with wine), Fritillaria Bulb (Bei Mu, 1 qian), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi, 0.7 fen). Use two cups of water, half a cup of child's urine (Tong Bian), and half a cup of lotus root juice (Ou Zhi); decoct and take. This formula treats hemoptysis with unparalleled miraculous efficacy, stopping bleeding after two doses.
For unceasing hemoptysis, an emergency rescue formula uses: Houttuynia Herb? No, Biota Tops (Qing Bai Ye, one handful), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, three slices), Donkey-Hide Gelatin (E Jiao, one piece). These three ingredients are decocted in two bowls of water until one bowl remains, then taken orally. Another formula: Take the expelled blood clots, stir-fry until black, grind into powder, and take three qian per dose, mixed with Ophiopogon Decoction (Mai Dong Tang). Another formula: Grind ancient gold ink into juice and drink it together with radish juice. Another formula: For phlegm streaked with blood, stop it with child's urine (Tong Bian) and bamboo sap (Zhu Li). (This entry is absent in the *Nanke* text). Another formula: Two to three qian of Rubia Cordifolia Root powder (Qian Cao Gen Mo), decocted with child's urine (Tong Bian) and taken orally. Another formula: For unceasing hemoptysis, lotus root juice (Ou Zhi) added with child's urine (Tong Bian) is beneficial. Another formula: Perilla Root (Da Su Ye Gen), crushed for juice and taken warm.
