In general, when a person suffers from asthma (asthma) and cannot lie flat, expectorating sputum like a gushing spring, with a non-dry tongue but unceasing wheezing, which worsens immediately upon lying down, this is not caused by external cold pathogen (external cold syndrome), but by cold qi in the Kidney. Since there is no fire (Yang Qi) in the Kidney, water lacks nourishment and warms, thus flooding upward to form phlegm. The prescription used is Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) added with Rougui (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), administered in large doses. When a person lies down, Lung Qi and Kidney Qi must be at peace, residing safely along the Heche pathway (River Chariot, referring to the circulation of Qi and Blood), without rushing or overflowing.
When a person's Kidney Fire rebels, supporting Liver Qi to rush upward, resulting in asthma, and even expectorating pinkish sputum, this is due to Kidney Fire flaming upward and burning Lung Metal. The Lung Heat fails to control Liver Wood, causing Dragon-Lei Fire (Ministerial Fire) to surge. Dragon-Lei Fire refers to Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire). The prescription is as follows: Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis), Shashen (Radix Glehniae), Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae). Decoct in water and take orally. The brilliance of this formula lies in Digupi clearing fire from the bone marrow, Shashen and Danshen nourishing Yin, Baishao calming the Liver, Maidong clearing the Lungs, and Gancao and Jiegeng guiding the herbs into the Lung Meridian, thereby eliminating phlegm and asthma and stabilizing breathing.
Some people suffer from asthma accompanied by coughing. People assume it is Qi deficiency with wind-phlegm, who knows that it is actually Qi deficiency failing to return to its source in the Kidney, while Liver Wood joins in to cause disturbance? The method should be to vigorously tonify the Kidney, with a small amount of herbs that guide fire back to its source, so that Qi naturally returns to the Kidney, and asthma and cough will cease. The prescription is: Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Gouqi (Fructus Lycii), Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). Decoct in water and take orally. After taking several doses, miraculous effects are expected. If treated with Simo Tang (Four-Monk Decoction) or Siqi Tang (Four-Seven Decoction), it will certainly be ineffective.
Some people present with false heat asthma and expectoration of sputum. People consider it a heat syndrome, but it is not heat; rather, extreme cold in the Lower Yuan forces the fire to float upward, causing asthma. This is a critical condition. If one does not urgently tonify the Kidney and Mingmen (Gate of Life) fire, the last thread of vitality will inevitably be severed. The prescription is: Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Maidong (Rhizoma Ophiopogonis), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentata), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi). Decoct in water, cool before drinking, and one dose brings recovery.
