Dampness-Induced Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain accompanied by an inability to bend forward is caused by dampness. The prescription is as follows:
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 1 qian) Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie, 1 qian) Polyporus (Zhuling, 1 qian) Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, 2 qian) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 5 qian)
Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 3 fen) Crucianellae Fructus (Baijiezi, 1 qian) Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, 3 qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 5 fen)
Decoct with water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies in its entry into the Kidney meridian to dispel dampness, rather than tonifying fluids within the Kidney. For acute onset, one or two doses can achieve efficacy. For chronic cases, prolonged administration is advisable.
Wind-Cold-Induced Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain accompanied by an inability to straighten the body is caused by Wind-Cold. Use Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with an addition of 2 qian of Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji); one dose can effect a cure. If the condition is chronic, add 1 liang of Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), change the dosage of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) to 2 qian, decoct with wine, and take orally; ten doses will effect a cure.
Kidney Deficiency-Induced Lower Back Pain
Diseases of the Kidney meridian, such as lower back pain, are treated with the following prescription:
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi, 3 liang) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 3 liang) Juglandis Semen (Hutaoren, 2 qian) Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 1 liang, stir-fried with salt water) Psoraleae Fructus (Poguzhi, 1 liang, stir-fried with salt water)
Make honey pills. Take 1 liang daily on an empty stomach with plain water. Self-healing occurs after completing the course. If not fully cured, another course will effect a cure.
Another Prescription
For Kidney Deficiency-Induced Lower Back Pain, use the following:
Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) soaked thoroughly in wine, dried by roasting, and ground into powder. Mix with non-impure wine for oral administration. Take 1–2 qian per dose.
Spleen Dampness-Induced Lower Back Pain
When pain persists without cessation, it is a disease of the Kidney meridian but stems from Spleen dampness. The prescription is as follows:
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 4 liang) Coicis Semen (Yiren, 3 liang) Euryales Semen (Qianshi, 2 liang)
Decoct 6 bowls of water until reduced to 1 bowl, and drink it all at once.
This prescription is also miraculous for treating nocturnal emission.
[The brilliance of this formula lies in using Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) to remove dampness from the waist and navel region, while Coicis Semen (Yiren) and Euryales Semen (Qianshi) are also dampness-dispelling herbs. Once dampness is removed, the waist and navel area becomes unobstructed, and pain naturally ceases.]
Pain of Waist, Legs, Bones, and Tendons
For this syndrome, use Yangxue Tang (Blood-Nourishing Decoction):
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 1 qian) Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi, 1 qian) Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 1 qian) Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 1 qian) Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 1 qian) Psoraleae Fructus (Poguzhi, 1 qian) Poria (Fuling, 1 qian)
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 1 qian) Corni Fructus (Shanyu, 2 qian) Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (Tufuling, 2 qian) Juglandis Semen (Hetaoren, 2 pieces) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 5 fen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 3 fen)
Decoct with water and wine, and take orally.
Lower Back Pain with Foot Pain
Lower back pain accompanied by foot pain is treated with the following prescription:
Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 0.5 jin) Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 5 qian) Poria (Fuling, 5 qian) Coicis Semen (Yiren, 5 qian) Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 1 liang) Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 3 qian) Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 1 qian)
Decoct 10 bowls of water until reduced to 2 bowls, add yellow wine, and [drink until intoxicated for a cure. These syndromes result from Wind pathogen invading the four limbs, head, back, and below the waist. Yellow wine serves to penetrate all meridians, enhance the medicinal properties, and direct them straight to the disease site. This is what is called a comprehensive treatment method.]
Pain in the waist and feet clearly indicates Kidney deficiency and Qi decline, [leading to immobility], compounded by dampness, which inevitably causes suffering. [The brilliance of this formula] lies in tonifying Qi rather than directly tonifying the Kidney, because sufficient Qi generates Blood, and generated Blood repels pathogens. Furthermore, Poria (Fuling), Coicis Semen (Yiren), and Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) assist in dispelling dampness; once dampness is removed, blood circulation becomes active. Moreover, there is Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) to strengthen the Kidney, Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) to warm the Kidney, and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) to disperse Wind? [Herbs mutually restrain and promote each other, assist and complete each other; this is an inevitable principle.]
Cold-Dampness-Induced Leg Pain
In this syndrome, the patient cannot leave the bed, exhibiting a pronounced stooped posture, caused by the invasion of Cold-Dampness qi. The prescription is as follows:
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 5 qian) Euryales Semen (Qianshi, 3 qian) Poria (Fuling, 1 liang) Piperis Longi Fructus (Bibo, 1 liang) Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 1 qian) Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 3 qian) Coicis Semen (Yiren, 2 liang)
Decoct with water and take orally.
Take it daily without changing the formula; over time, great success will be achieved.
[The brilliance of this formula lies in Coicis Semen (Yiren) entering the bones to remove water-dampness, adding Euryales Semen (Qianshi) to strengthen the Spleen and dispel dampness, preventing dampness from aggravating dampness, while Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi) and Piperis Longi Fructus (Bibo) are most beneficial for both feet; furthermore, Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) acts as a guiding herb, penetrating directly into the bones. Can dampness remain undispelled or pain persist?]
Wind-Injury-Induced Leg Pain
[For this syndrome, use the following prescription:]
Garlic Bulb (Suanban, 3 qian) Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 3 qian) Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 3 qian) Carthami Flos (Honghua, 3 qian) Lycii Cortex (Digupi, 3 qian) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Chuanwu, 3 qian) Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Preparata (Caowu, 3 qian)
Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang, 3 qian) Myrrha (Moyao, 3 qian)
Wash the affected area with a decoction of half a qian of Herba Siegesbeckiae (Tougucacao), dry with fire, cover with blankets to induce sweating, and the condition will resolve. If ineffective, wash two or three more times.
Waist and Leg Pain
[For this syndrome, use Muer Wan (Wood Ear Pill):]
Lactucae Semen (Wojuzi, 4 liang) Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi, 4 liang) Tremellae Fructus (Baimuer, 0.5 jin) Make honey pills (take 2 qian per dose).
This prescription is recorded in *Fang Lun* but absent in *Nanke*.
