Old Man Ma from Xinzhai, aged fifty-nine, fell ill with wind convulsions (Feng Chu) due to fright after being beaten with sixty strokes by officials for unpaid autumn taxes. This condition had persisted for three years. During severe attacks, his hands and feet trembled uncontrollably, preventing him from holding objects; he required others to feed him, and his mouth and eyes would open wide, often biting his lips and tongue until they were raw. His body shook as if he were a marionette controlled by strings, drawing crowds of onlookers in the market each time an attack occurred. At night, he suffered from fever, discarding all bedding, experiencing generalized dryness and itching, with internal heat but external cold sensations. Desiring suicide, he lacked the strength to tie a rope. He exhausted his wealth seeking medical help, even bankrupting his family, yet the disease remained stubborn. His son, a former minor clerk in the county, consulted Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng) regarding his parents' illness. Dai Ren stated: "This disease is very easy to treat. If it were midsummer, one application of emesis (Yong) followed by one application of purgation (Du) would suffice. Now that it is autumn and cold, three courses may be needed; if not cured, puncturing specific acupoints will ensure recovery." First, Tongsheng San was administered to induce sweating, followed by emetic agents, resulting in the expulsion of one or two sheng of phlegm. By evening, there were five to seven bowel movements, and the condition improved slightly. After five days, another course of emesis expelled three or four sheng of phlegm, resembling chicken yolk clumps and feeling hot like boiling water. Since Old Man Ma’s hand tremors prevented self-induced vomiting, his wife assisted, causing swelling and injury to his throat. He became comatose and confused, akin to drunkenness, recovering consciousness after about one or two hours. Further bowel movements immediately lightened his steps, reduced tremors, and ceased the fever, allowing him to walk and hold a comb or chopsticks himself. Before completing three courses of emesis, the disease vanished as cleanly as after a bath. Post-illness, he felt extreme cold. Dai Ren advised: "Nourish him with food; it will subside naturally. When a major disease departs, Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) has not yet recovered, so dispersing wind and guiding qi herbs are appropriate. Do not use hot tonics, lest they cause other diseases."
The wife of Lord Lu Junyu, over thirty years old, suffered from wind convulsions, vertigo, and opisthotonos (Jiao Gong Fan Zhang), unable to eat for several days. Various physicians treated her as having fright-wind, hidden-wind, or wind epilepsy, using Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile (Tiannanxing), Realgar (Xionghuang), Radix Gastrodiae (Tianma), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Wutou), and Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi), with no effect whatsoever. Dai Ren stated: "All wind-related tremors and vertigo belong to Liver Wood. The bending, straightening, and shaking are functions of Wind. Yang governs movement; Yin governs stillness. Here, excessive Fire controls Metal; weakened Metal fails to restrain Wood, causing Liver Wood to flourish and become diseased." Dai Ren first induced emesis to expel two or three sheng of wind-phlegm, then used cold-natured purgatives for more than ten bowel movements, and finally punctured the Baihui (GV20) acupoint to bleed two cups, resulting in a cure.
