A woman, over forty years old, became pregnant. Believing herself to be aging and suffering from multiple illnesses, she feared the recurrence of her old diseases and informed her physician. The physician failed to examine her carefully, applied burning needles (burned acupuncture) on both sides of the navel, and used toxic drugs to attack and grind away the perceived pathogenic factors. This led to worsening abdominal pain, reduced appetite, emaciation, and confinement to bed. She then sought advice from Dairen (Zhang Congzheng). Dairen palpated her pulse and said: "All six pulses are level, except for the right chi pulse which is surging, large, and forceful; this is a pregnancy pulse. Coupled with food cravings, it is undoubtedly pregnancy." Those around him all laughed at him. Within a few months, she gave birth to a daughter who had burn marks from the needles under each eye, nearly losing her sight. When treating women, one must first inquire about pregnancy; one must not act hastily.
Dairen traveled and passed through Guxi City, where he saw a man who had been beaten with a cane. His sores were painful and inflamed, toxins had entered the interior, and phlegm-rheum caused by fright blocked his airways. His jaws were locked shut, unable to open, and he could not take porridge or medicine. For over a month, various treatments failed, and he was resigned to death. Dairen first administered Sansheng San (Three Holy Powders), inducing vomiting of blue-green phlegm-rheum caused by fright, approximately half a large jar; next, he gave more than a hundred pills of Lige Wan (Diaphragm-Opening Pill), resulting in the passage of foul-smelling, dry feces, filling another large jar; then he decocted Tongsheng San (Supreme Unity Powder), several qian, and administered it hot; furthermore, he used a sour, spicy, green onion, and vinegar soup to induce sweating. Soon after, sweating and vomiting occurred simultaneously, and the man recovered. This method can save those who have suffered unjustly.
A man went mad after falling from a horse. He would stand up with eyes staring fixedly, speak wildly without recognizing relatives or strangers, strip naked and run, and shout curses incessantly. His strength doubled, making it impossible for three or four people to restrain him. They burned talismans and held rituals, consulted ghosts and shamans, paying no heed to anything else. Cinnabar, realgar, ox gallstone, rhinoceros horn, pearl, borneol, and musk were consumed until wealth was exhausted and the household was bare. Traveling two hundred li, they requested Dairen to come. Dairen buried a cart wheel in the ground, leaving about two zhang exposed above ground. He placed a medium-sized wheel on top of it, carved a hole in the rim resembling a basin, and tied the mad patient onto it, making him lie prone, cushioned with soft material. An adult sat on a mechanism below to push and stir, rotating the wheel thousands of times. The patient vomited one or two dou of blue-yellow phlegm-rheum. After circling the wheel several times, the patient said, "I cannot endure this anymore; please unbind me." They followed his request and released him. He demanded cool water, drank several sheng of ice water, and only then did his madness subside.
