When a newborn is delivered, the entire body lacks skin and consists only of red flesh. There are two types of this condition: (A) It is caused by the parents having had "Yangmei Jiedu" (Syphilis/Kumquat Knot Toxin) previously, which was transmitted to the fetus. Consequently, upon birth, the infant may have red ulcers on either the upper or lower half of the body, or even with a purple-black discoloration. (B) It is caused by premature birth due to insufficient gestational months, resulting in the whole body being macerated, with red, tender, and smooth skin. Both conditions are considered dangerous and malignant presentations.
For type (A), where the lack of skin is due to parental residual toxin, ancient methods prescribe internal administration of Huanji Xiaodu San (Muscle-Replacing and Toxin-Expelling Powder, containing Dang Gui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], Sheng Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Chi Shao [Paeoniae Radix Rubra], Chuan Xiong [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], Zao Ci [Gleditsiae Spina], Tu Fu Ling [Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma], Yin Hua [Flos Lonicerae Jinhuanghua], Lian Qiao [Fructus Forsythiae], Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens], Bai Zhi [Angelicae Dahuricae Radix], Ku Shen [Sophorae Flavescentis Radix], Bai Xian Pi [Cortex Dictamni], Fang Feng [Saposhnikoviae Radix], using Deng Xin Cao [Junci Medulla] as a guide). Externally, Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment) is applied (made by soaking Duan Shi [Calamina] powder in water and exposing it overnight; the cloud-skin-like substance floating on the surface is gently collected, mixed with a little clear water, and stirred smoothly into small-grind sesame oil to form an ointment), or Ji Huang San (Chicken Yellow Powder, containing Huang Bo [Phellodendri Cortex] and Shi Gao [Gypsum Fibrosum] in equal parts, ground into fine powder). If wet, dry powder is dusted on; if dry, pig bile is used to mix and apply.
For type (B), where the condition is due to insufficient fetal origin, ancient methods prescribe internal administration of Dang Gui Yin (Dang Gui Decoction, containing He Shou Wu [Polygoni Multiflori Radix], Bai Xian Pi [Cortex Dictamni], Bai Ji Li [Tribuli Fructus], Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma], Dang Gui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], Sheng Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Bai Shao [Paeoniae Radix Alba], Ren Shen [Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma], Huang Qi [Astragali Radix], Chuan Xiong [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], etc.). Externally, fine powder from early rice white grains is prepared and frequently dusted on the body, allowing the skin to gradually grow.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: Internal administration of multiple herbal decoctions is certainly not bearable for a newborn's constitution. For type (A), simply use Yin Hua [Flos Lonicerae Jinhuanghua] and Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens] boiled in water for oral administration, and externally apply Lu Gan Shi [Halloysitum Rubrum] powder mixed with egg white. For type (B), medication is unnecessary; simply use high-quality Jing Mi [Oryza Sativa Japonica Group Semen], preferably produced in Fujian Province, followed by that from Yiyang County, Jiangxi Province (which is inferior to Fujian produce). Grind it into extremely fine powder and dust it on the body, which is relatively stable and safe.
When an infant is born with yellowing of the entire body and face, with a color like gold, this is due to excessive damp-heat in the pregnant woman. The fetus, while in the womb, is long exposed to damp-heat steaming, accumulating toxins that cause this syndrome. There is a distinction between mild yellow and deep yellow. Mild cases are treated with ancient method Sheng Di Huang Tang (Sheng Di Huang Decoction, containing Sheng Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Chi Shao [Paeoniae Radix Rubra], Chuan Xiong [Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma], Dang Gui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], Chi Ling [Poria Cocos with Red Host], Ze Xie [Alismatis Rhizoma], Zhu Ling [Poria Cocos], Tian Hua Fen [Trichosanthis Radix], Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens], Yin Chen Hao [Artemisiae Scopariae Herba], using Deng Xin Cao [Junci Medulla] as a guide). Severe cases (deep yellow) are treated with Xi Jiao San (Xi Jiao Powder, containing Xi Jiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu], Yin Chen Hao [Artemisiae Scopariae Herba], Gua Lou Gen [Trichosanthis Radix], Sheng Ma [Cimicifugae Rhizoma], Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens], Long Dan Cao [Gentianae Radix], Sheng Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Han Shui Shi [Aqua Stibitum], etc.), all employing the method of promoting diuresis to drain dampness and clearing heat.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note]: For mild yellow, only four herbs are needed: Yin Chen Hao [Artemisiae Scopariae Herba], Zhu Ling [Poria Cocos], Ze Xie [Alismatis Rhizoma], and Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens]. For deep yellow, only six herbs are sufficient: Yin Chen Hao [Artemisiae Scopariae Herba], Xi Sheng Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Chi Ling [Poria Cocos with Red Host], Hua Shi [Talcum], Sheng Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Recens], and Deng Xin Cao [Junci Medulla]. Multiple doses are not necessary.
