Method 1: In the event of sudden pain in the left hypochondrium, mentally recite: "The Liver is the Azure Dragon (Qinglong), the Soul Spirit (Hunshen) in the left eye leads the five camp troops, with thousands of chariots and ten thousand cavalry, following the Jia-Yin Zhi Fu Li (Official of Direct Command), entering beneath the left hypochondrium to remove the pathogen."

Explanation: The main idea of this passage is that for sudden left hypochondriac pain, one may mentally recite "The Liver is the Azure Dragon...", using intention to guide Qi to beneath the left hypochondrium, thereby eliminating the disease. The terms "Azure Dragon," "Soul Spirit," and "leading the five camp troops, with thousands of chariots and ten thousand cavalry, following the Jia-Yin Zhi Fu Li" are all Daoist esoteric language. The same applies to "White Tiger," "Soul Spirit," and "Jia-Shen Zhi Fu Li" in the subsequent paragraph. Detailed explanation is omitted here.

Method 2: For pain in the right hypochondrium, mentally recite: "The Lung is the White Tiger (Baihu), the Soul Spirit (Hunshen) in the right eye leads the five camp troops, with thousands of chariots and ten thousand cavalry, following the Jia-Shen Zhi Fu Li, entering beneath the right hypochondrium to remove the pathogen." Lie on your side, extend the arms, straighten the legs, inhale through the nose, and exhale through the mouth. This eliminates skin pain in the hypochondriac region; stop after seven breaths.

Explanation: For right hypochondriac pain, one may mentally recite "The Lung is the White Tiger...", using intention to guide Qi into beneath the right hypochondrium, thereby eliminating the disease. Additionally, adopt a lateral recumbent position, extend the arms, straighten the legs, inhale through the nose, and exhale through the mouth, ceasing after seven breaths. This can also eliminate skin pain in the hypochondriac area.

Method 3: Sit upright, straighten the waist and back, look backward to the right towards the moon, inhale through the mouth, and swallow thirty times. This eliminates left hypochondriac pain. Keep the eyes open during practice.

Explanation: Sit upright and straighten the waist and back, gaze to the right rear towards the moon, inhale through the mouth, and swallow the Qi thirty times. This eliminates left hypochondriac pain. Practice with eyes open.

Method 4: Raise both hands, cross them above the neck, and clasp tightly, exerting maximum force. This treats pain beneath the hypochondrium. Sit on the ground, cross the fingers of both hands, grip firmly but not completely locked, and pull back urgently. Long-term practice of this method makes the body solid as Vajra (Diamond). Simultaneously, regulate the breath; the key to breath regulation is that breathing should be even and long, visualizing the Qi drifting lightly like wind blowing clouds, or the roaring sound and light of thunder entering the abdomen with inhalation and exhalation.

Summary:
This section introduces Daoist Daoyin methods involving the mental recitation of mantras. Although the mantras carry superstitious elements, the Daoyin methods themselves possess a certain degree of scientific validity. Focused mental recitation of a few characters or a short phrase can induce single-minded concentration, dissolve distracting thoughts, reduce drowsiness, focus attention on the diseased site, and facilitate tranquility and relaxation. However, clinical practice suggests that the recited text should not be too long; excessive mental effort and difficulty coordinating with respiration may lead to head distension and headache, chest tightness and irritability, or rapid or obstructed breathing. Since this section involves reciting the mantra first and then regulating the breath, this sequence generally does not interfere with respiration. The requirement for "making the breath regulated, long, like clouds, like thunder" is highly correct. The basic respiratory requirement for Qigong practice is to make the breath "regulated, soft, fine, drawing out short pathological breaths and making them long." Soft and fine implies gentle and subtle movements, where the entry and exit of Qi resemble a silkworm spinning silk—continuous and unbroken—and like flowing clouds and water, natural in arrival and departure. *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases), Volume II, "Wind Syndromes," citing the *Wusheng Jing* (Scripture of Non-Birth), states: "To treat hundred diseases, evil ghosts, and gu poison. One should lie flat on the back, close the eyes and hold the breath, visualize inwardly at the Dantian, slowly inhale through the nose until the abdomen is extremely full, then slowly exhale through the mouth without making sound. Let the intake be abundant and the output minimal, performing it subtly... Also, visualize great lightning and thunder, rumbling and flashing, entering the abdomen. If practiced continuously, the disease will naturally disappear." Here, "visualize great lightning and thunder" means imagining great lightning and thunder whose sound and light enter the abdomen. "Longhuang" refers to rumbling and flashing; "longlong" describes the loud roar of thunder, and "huanghuang" describes its bright light. "Like thunder" thus means visualizing rumbling and flashing thunder entering the abdomen.
