[Original Text] Method One: Hands extend backward, palms joined, pushing upward against the lower back with maximum effort, while shaking the arms and elbows back and forth seven times. Initially, keep the hands stationary, then move them directly up and down with full force for fourteen repetitions (two sets of seven). This method removes Qi stagnation and oppression in the spine, heart, and lungs.
[Explanation] Extend hands backward, join left and right palms, and strive to push the waist upward, shaking both arms and elbows back and forth seven times. Then, maintaining the same posture as before, join palms to support the waist, rubbing the waist directly up and down with force for fourteen repetitions. This can treat symptoms of Qi stagnation and discomfort in the spine, heart, and lungs.
[Original Text] Method Two: Bring the toes of both feet facing each other; pause after five breaths to guide Heart and Lung Qi. This eliminates Jue Ni (cold extremities) and Shang Qi (rebellious Qi). Exert maximum effort to bring the two feet together, focusing intention on guiding the Qi out of the Lungs. Allow the patient to perform rotational flexion and extension movements of Lung Qi inside and outside the body, ensuring no obstruction or rebellion occurs.
[Explanation] Align the big toes of both feet, practice Qi circulation for five breaths, then pause. Use intention to guide Qi into the Heart and Lungs, which can eliminate Jue Ni and Shang Qi. Subsequently, exert maximum effort to keep the feet facing each other, using intention to guide internal Lung Qi outward. Let the patient circulate Lung Qi, enabling it to rotate and flex/extend normally within and outside the body. Wherever the Qi reaches, there will be no obstruction, allowing smooth Qi flow and dissipation of stagnation.
Summary:
The "Qi Gate" section mainly discusses Lung Qi stagnation and Jue Ni with Shang Qi. The Lungs govern Qi and respiration, overseeing the circulation of Qi in the human body. *Ling Shu: Nine Needles Treatise* states: "The Lungs are the canopy of the five Zang organs and six Fu organs." The term "canopy" metaphorically describes the Lungs' superior position, like a heavenly cover protecting all things. Located superiorly, the Lungs govern descending and purifying functions. Only when Lung Qi descends properly can inhaled clear Qi and the essence from grains be distributed to other Zang and Fu organs, maintaining their normal activities. When descending function is normal, airways remain patent, breathing is regular, and gas exchange between the interior and exterior of the body proceeds normally. If "Lung fails to descend," symptoms such as panting, coughing, rebellious Lung Qi, chest tightness, and Qi oppression occur. Treatment should focus on regulating Qi and directing rebellious Qi downward. This section employs dynamic exercises—pushing the waist with both hands and shaking the elbows—and static exercises—using intention to guide internal Lung Qi outward—to regulate Lung Qi stagnation. Specifically, rubbing the lower back downward facilitates smooth Qi mechanism and directs Qi downward; using intention to guide Lung Qi outward dissipates stagnant Qi and releases obstructed Qi. Combining dynamic and static practices yields better results. Patients with chronic cor pulmonale, tracheitis, asthma, etc., may adopt these exercises.
