Prolonged viewing damages blood (Xue, Blood), prolonged lying down damages Qi (Qi, Vital Energy), prolonged standing damages bones (Gu, Bones), and prolonged sitting damages muscles (Rou, Muscles). All deep thinking and overexertion harm the body; excessive worry, resentment, and sorrow harm the body; excessive joy harms the body; unresolved anger harms the body; eager pursuit of desires harms the body; constant anxiety about misfortunes harms the body; improper regulation of cold and heat harms the body; and improper sexual intercourse harms the body. Sexual intercourse must be conducted according to Dao Yin (Guiding and Pulling) techniques. If one can avoid these harmful practices and master the art of harmonizing Yin and Yang (Yin-Yang, the complementary opposites in nature), this is the way to immortality. Extreme happiness causes Qi to fly and scatter; extreme sorrow causes Qi to become blocked; excessive use of Jing (Jing, Essence) leads to exhaustion of Qi and strength; excessive viewing leads to blindness; excessive sleep leads to mental restlessness; and greed for delicious food leads to diarrhea and dysentery. Ordinary people only know to crave the five flavors, but do not know that Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) can be consumed. Sages know that the five flavors cause disease, so they do not crave them; they know that Yuan Qi can be taken, so they keep their mouths closed to preserve it. If saliva is not swallowed, it is like the sea not being moistened; if the sea is not moistened, Jin Ye (Body Fluids) will be deficient. Thus, consuming Yuan Qi and drinking Li Quan (Sweet Spring, a metaphor for saliva) is the root of longevity. Bathing without a fixed routine is inauspicious; bathing together with one's spouse is inauspicious; after just bathing, or when drunk and full, or returning from long travel while extremely fatigued, one must not engage in sexual activity, as it will cause illness; one must be very cautious. Men should not sleep with their heads facing north, as this makes the Six Spirits (Liu Shen, the spiritual aspects of the mind) uneasy and causes melancholy and forgetfulness. Do not linger near wells; this is a great taboo in ancient and modern times. If there is a wall within ten steps, do not sit or lie against it, as wind blowing on you may cause epilepsy (Dian Xian). Do not stare angrily at the sun or moon for a long time, or you will lose clear vision. When sweating heavily, do not suddenly undress carelessly, or you are likely to suffer from hemiplegia (Pian Feng) or paralysis of half the body. After a new bath, do not expose your head to the wind; otherwise, you may unfortunately contract severe wind diseases or piercing wind disorders. When coming back from cold exposure, do not face a fire source, or you may develop epilepsy or wind-induced dizziness. When sweating, do not hang your feet off the bed edge; doing so for a long time will lead to Blood Bi (Blood Obstruction) syndrome, heavy legs, and lower back pain. When your feet are sweaty, do not enter water immediately, or you may develop Bone Bi syndrome or Dun Zhu (a chronic wasting disease). Holding urine for a long time causes cold knees and Cold Bi syndrome. When eating hot food and sweating, do not face the wind, or you may develop Zhu Tou Tong (wandering headache), causing dry eyes and excessive tearing. When feeling sleepy, do not sing or chant, as this is inauspicious. After waking up, do not speak loudly, as this depletes your Qi. If a bird flies into you and dies, do not eat it; especially if its mouth is open or there are sores under its feathers, do not eat it at all. Washing hair with hot rice water followed by cold water rinse causes Head Wind (Tou Feng). When sleeping, do not place a charcoal stove near your head, as this causes heavy head, red eyes, and dry nose. After lying down, do not place a lamp near your head, as this makes the Six Spirits uneasy. In winter, warm your feet and chill your head; in spring and autumn, chill both your head and feet; this is the regular method of sages. If you eat immediately after crying, you will develop Qi disorders. At night, do not cover your head while sleeping; women should not sit on the stove, which is a great taboo. When spitting, do not spit too far away, or you may develop Lung disease, causing heavy hands, back pain, and coughing. If someone suffers from nightmare (Yan), do not light a lamp to shine on them; this will surely cause death from nightmare. Call them softly in the dark for good fortune; do not approach closely or call urgently. When sleeping, do not breathe through your mouth; doing so for a long time leads to Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting syndrome) and loss of blood luster. In the morning, do not wash your eyes and face with cold water, as this causes dry eyes, blindness, and excessive tearing. While traveling, if exposed to heat, do not wash your face in rivers, or you may develop black spots in the eye (Wu Yi). If you wake up suddenly from sleep, do not drink water and go back to sleep, or you may develop Water Bi syndrome. When a seasonal disease has just healed and sweat has resolved, do not drink cold water, as this damages the heart and abdomen and prevents recovery. Never smell dead bodies on an empty stomach; inhaling the odor causes disease. If you must view a corpse, drink alcohol and chew garlic first to ward off toxic vapors. Do not let children point at the moon with their fingers, or sores will grow behind their ears; this is called Moon Eclipse Sores (Yue Shi Chuang). Applying crushed toad powder heals it, and other sores will not grow. Postpartum women should not see people with fox odor, as it can cause swelling in the woman. Do not sleep directly under windows, as this makes the Six Spirits uneasy. For sleeping positions, in spring and summer, the head should face east; in autumn and winter, the head should face west, which is beneficial. For men, urinate while sitting when hungry, and stand when full, to remain healthy. When sleeping, curl your knees and lie on your side to benefit Qi and strength. Turn over several times during sleep. Speak and laugh softly; do not raise your voice. In spring, sleep late and rise early; in summer and autumn, sleep near nightfall and rise early; in winter, sleep early and rise late; all are beneficial. Although rising early is advised, do not rise before the rooster crows; although rising late is advised, do not rise after sunrise. In winter, heaven and earth close, and Yang Qi hides; humans should not labor. Sweating dissipates Yang Qi and harms the body. After bathing, do not face the wind, or you may lose your voice. Do not sleep with wet hair, or you will suffer from Head Wind, dizziness, hair loss, facial swelling, toothache, and deafness. Do not wear wet or sweaty clothes for long, or you will develop sores and wind-induced itching. The Old Master (Lao Jun) said: On the first day of the first month, bow twice towards the Yin direction in the courtyard and recite: "(Name) receives the grace of the Great Dao year after year, from the Mysterious Gate of Taiqing, I wish to return (Name)'s past year." Both men and women recite this three times. Practicing this regularly extends life. (Nu Xu had methods for clearing the spirit; King of Huainan advocated worshipping the Kitchen God; all wished to align with true spirits and protect true life). The "Secret Essentials of Immortal Scriptures" states: Constantly visualize a Qi in your heart, the size of a chicken egg, red inside and yellow outside. This wards off evil spirits and extends life. To repel evil spirits and ghosts, constantly visualize them as a bright, glowing fire like a dipper; then no evil spirit dares to invade, and you can enter plague areas. At night before sleep, visualize red Qi outside and white Qi inside, covering your body, to ward off evil spirits and demons. The Old Master said: Those seeking the Dao must not commit the Five Reversals (Wu Ni) and Six Inauspicious Acts (Liu Bu Xiang); violators meet with disaster. Urinating or defecating facing West is the First Reversal; facing North is the Second; facing the Sun is the Third; facing the Moon is the Fourth; looking up at the sky and stars is the Fifth. Getting up naked at night is the First Inauspicious Act; waking up angry is the Second; cursing the Kitchen God is the Third; kicking fire with your foot is the Fourth; sexual intercourse during the day between husband and wife is the Fifth; stealing from or resenting one's teacher is the Sixth. When rising in the morning, always speak good words, and Heaven will grant blessings. Do not say "What can be done?" or howl/sing, as this invites disaster. Do not sing in bed (inauspicious); do not sleep lying prone on the bed (inauspicious); do not eat leaning on the bed (inauspicious); do not strike plates with chopsticks/spoons (inauspicious). The Spirit of Yin resides on the left of the mouth; if one commits hidden evils, this Spirit reports to Heaven, and Heaven examines the soul. The Spirit of Killing resides on the right of the mouth; if one speaks ill, this Spirit reports to the Lord of Life (Si Ming), who records it; when sins are full, killing occurs. These two spirits monitor the mouth; one must be careful with speech. The tongue is the weapon of the body; good and evil arise from it, hence it is taboo in Daoism. Consuming Yu Quan (Jade Spring, i.e., saliva) extends life and removes hundred diseases. Yu Quan is saliva. At times of Ji Ming (Rooster Crow), Ping Dan (Daybreak), Ri Zhong (Noon), Ri Bu (Afternoon), Huang Hun (Twilight), and Ye Ban (Midnight), rinse and swallow saliva seven times a day. Swallow a full mouth each time to extend life. For hair depletion, bone/tooth depletion, and nail/tendon depletion: comb hair a thousand times to prevent graying; tap teeth morning and evening to prevent decay; do not cut nails frequently to maintain tendon vitality. Frequently look in the mirror, called "Preserving Form"; form and spirit support each other. However, if merely admiring one's appearance, better not to look. On specific days: Jan 1, Feb 2, Mar 3, Apr 8, May 1, Jun 27, Jul 11, Aug 8, Sep 21, Oct 14, Nov 11, Dec 30, gather Goji berry leaves, boil into soup, and bathe. This makes one radiant, disease-free, and ageless. During a lunar eclipse, save lives, remove calamities, and save ten thousand people, achieving merit equal to Heaven (Heaven dislikes killing; sages emulate this. Disliking killing means assisting Heaven and Earth in nurturing life, thus attracting great fortune). Good dreams can be told; bad dreams should be kept silent, which nourishes nature and extends life.
