Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (6 fen, for invigorating blood), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (6 fen, for regulating qi), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (6 fen, for tonifying the middle), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) (7 fen), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 6 fen, for resolving toxicity). The above herbs are decocted with one zhong of water until reduced to seven-tenths, and taken warm. Adding a small amount of wine enhances efficacy. Alternatively, if the eruption on the four limbs is sluggish, add Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (5 fen). On the eighth or ninth day of onset, modify this formula to aid in the circulation of qi and blood and the filling of pustules. On the thirteenth or fourteenth day, use Bao Yuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction) added with Bai Zhu, Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi, and Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) to assist scab formation. If thirst occurs, use Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) (formula seen in Summer category); if toxic heat remains unresolved, use the subsequent formula.
Niu Bang Zi (1 qian), Lian Qiao, Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Xuan Shen (each 7 fen), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (each 5 fen), Zi Cao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix) (5 fen), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (3 fen, ground into powder and added to the decoction), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui, Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 6 fen). The above herbs are decocted with one zhong of water until reduced to seven-tenths, and taken to resolve toxic heat, bringing immediate relief.
The general principle: Bao Yuan Tang, Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), and Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) should all be used in combination according to the abundance or deficiency of qi and blood. If toxic pathogen is strong, use purgation; if weak, use dispersion. If cold, use warming; if heat, use clearing. Success depends entirely on flexible application, ensuring safety. Ancient formulas such as Mu Xiang Yi Gong San (Costus and Yi Gong Powder) are often drying and heating; they should not be used lightly unless there is a true cold syndrome. Exercise extreme caution.
For children who have not yet developed smallpox lesions, taking one pill on the days of Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox will gradually digest the smallpox toxin. Taking it only once or twice merely reduces the toxin slightly; taking it for three years, six times a year, completely digests the toxin, ensuring absolute safety. This formula is mysterious and was not intended for easy dissemination, but out of compassion for young children, I cannot withhold it. I wish to share it with benevolent gentlemen everywhere.
Chan Dou Teng (Vitis Flexuosa Thunb. Vine or similar vine缠绕 on soybean stalks) (1 liang 5 qian, harvested in August, specifically the fine red thread-like vine缠绕 on soybean stalks, dried in shade. This is the principal herb, its efficacy lies here), Hei Dou (Black Soybean Seed) (30 grains), Chi Dou (Red Bean) (70 grains), Shan Zha Rou (Crataegi Fructus flesh) (1 liang), Xin Sheng Ma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (7 qian 5 fen), Jing Jie (5 qian), Fang Feng (5 qian), Sheng Di Huang, Chuan Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Gan Cao, Dang Gui (each 5 qian), Lian Qiao (7 qian 5 fen), Huang Lian, Chi Shao Yao, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 5 qian), Niu Bang Zi (1 liang), Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (separately ground, boiled together with Gan Cao [1 liang 5 qian] then removed), Ku Si Gua (Bitter Loofah Fruit) (one fruit, each 5 cun long, from the previous year after frost is best, burned to ash retaining nature). All ingredients are ground into an extremely fine powder, mixed with brown sugar, and pounded over a thousand times to form pills the size of a plum pit. Each time, take one pill, dissolved in thickly decocted Gan Cao tea. The aforementioned herbs must be carefully selected and prepared beforehand. Manufacture on Spring Equinox, Autumn Equinox, or the 15th day of the first and seventh lunar months. Must be done with sincerity. Avoid contact with women, chickens, cats, dogs, and mourners. Preparation must occur in a clean room with incense burning. Face the sun and chant over the medicine: "Divine true medicine, harmonizing with nature; infants swallowing it, sharing years with heaven and earth. I invoke Taishang Laojun's order, swiftly execute." Recite seven breaths.
Treating infantile tetanus (Umbilical Wind/Cuo Kou) occurring within seven days of birth, which is almost invariably fatal, leaving parents helpless and pitying. There is a secret method that is extremely effective, though rarely known in the world. For any child suffering from this disease, look for small blisters on the gums resembling millet grains. Immediately dip a soft green cloth or cotton-wrapped finger in warm water and gently wipe/break the blister. The mouth will open immediately, providing relief without need for medication. It is miraculous and infallible.
