Postpartum women, due to worry, fright, and fatigue, experience a sudden deficiency of Qi and Blood, making them susceptible to various pathogenic factors invading the deficiency. If there is Qi dispersion, do not exclusively use dispersing agents; if there is food stagnation, do not exclusively use digestive agents. In cases of heat, avoid using Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian); in cases of cold, avoid using Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi). Using cold herbs leads to blood stasis and clots; using hot herbs leads to hemorrhage of fresh blood. Regarding deficiency in the middle jiao with external contraction, presenting with many symptoms of the Three Yang exterior syndromes, sweating might seem appropriate; however, using Ephedra Decoction (Mahuang Tang) postpartum would severely deplete Yang Qi. Presenting with many symptoms of the Three Yin interior syndromes, purgation might seem appropriate; however, using Chengqi Decoction postpartum would severely lose Yin and Blood. Deafness and hypochondriac pain are due to Kidney deficiency and lochia retention; do not use Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) formulas. Delirium and sweating are symptoms of Yuan Qi weakness resembling pathogenic invasion; do not treat as Stomach excess heat. Cold extremities result from the decline of Yang Qi, where cold and heat are hard to distinguish; only major tonification can restore Yang Qi and revive weakness. Spasms are due to Yin and Blood deficiency; only nourishing Ying Blood can relax tendons and activate collaterals. Again, alternating chills and fever with periodic onset resembles malaria; treating it as malaria will lead to prolonged difficulty in cure. Spirit failing to reside in its house and incoherent speech resemble demonic possession; treating it as such portends danger and凶险. Excessive blood loss leading to dry and constipated stool requires adding Cistanche Herba (Rongsheng) to Shenghua Decoction, rather than using intestinal moistening or Chengqi Decoctions for unblocking. Excessive sweating leading to short and scanty urine requires doubling Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) in Six Gentlemen Decoction (Liujunzi Tang); generating fluids and assisting liquids can promote diuresis. Frequent administration of Ginseng-added Shenghua Decoction saves postpartum crises; repeated use has revived those who had ceased eating grain. Hernia and rectal prolapse are mostly due to Qi deficiency sinking; formulas like Tonifying the Middle and Augmenting Qi Decoction (Buzhong Yiqi Tang) are required. Lockjaw and clenched fists are due to Blood dryness resembling wind; use Ginseng-added Shenghua Decoction. If the vaginal opening is invaded by wind causing severe pain, use Angelicae Sinensis and Saposhnikoviae Root Nourishing Ying Decoction (Qiangduo Yangrong Fang). If the vulva is injured by cold and fails to close, wash with Bedstraw (Chuangu), Cornus Fruit (Shanzhuyu), and Sulfur (Liuhuang). Palpitations and fright should be treated with Shenghua Decoction adding Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi). Apparent delirium and trance-like states are assisted by Anshen Wan helping Guipi Decoction. Fullness and empty irritability due to Qi stagnation: Shenghua Decoction with Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) as an assistant. Belching sourness and food aversion due to diet: Six Gentlemen Decoction adding Massae Medicamentae Fermentatae Shenqu (Shenqu) and Fructus Hordei Germinatus Maiya (Maiya) is good. Lithospermum Radix et Rhizoma (Sumu), Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Ezhu), and Curcumae Phaeocaulis Rhizoma (Pengling) strongly break blood; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi) and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi) best eliminate fullness and distension. All agents that consume Qi and break blood, as well as strategies of sweating, vomiting, and purging, are only applicable to the young and strong, how can they be used for pregnancy and childbirth? Generally, after delivery, first ask about the lochia. For those with residual clots and pain, Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) can be appropriately added; once abdominal pain stops, Tonifying the Middle and Augmenting Qi Decoction is undoubtedly indicated. As for Yang collapse with high fever, uterine bleeding, and fainting, rapidly decocting the original Shenghua Decoction is emergency rescue. Wang Taipu said: Treating lower body diseases requires careful regulation of urgency and slowness; if the nourishing path is too long and power weak, or if the urgent formula has thin flavor and qi, the power is equivalent to being weak. Therefore, treating postpartum conditions should follow Master Danxi's principle of consolidating the root; the method of taking medicine should imitate Taipu by increasing frequency. Any extraordinary art bearing life and death must focus on emergency rescue; to avoid shame in looking up and down, one must preserve a heart of loving all beings. Although this does not detail all postpartum syndromes, every syndrome listed is based on verified experiences from nearby villages, which may certainly provide some minor benefit.
