Huangdi asked: Do women have no facial hair because they lack Qi and Blood? Qibo answered: The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) both originate from Baozhong (Uterus/Womb), ascend along the interior of the spine, and serve as the Sea of the Meridians. Their branches that float outward ascend along the right side of the abdomen, converge at the throat, and branch off to connect with the lips and mouth. When Qi and Blood are abundant, they fill the skin and warm the flesh; when Blood is particularly abundant, it渗ates into the skin and generates fine hair. Now, after birth, women have an excess of Qi but a deficiency of Blood, due to frequent blood loss (menstruation). The Chong and Ren vessels do not nourish the lips and mouth, hence facial hair does not grow. Huangdi asked: If a scholar injures his Zongjin (Genitals), causing the Yin Qi to be severed and unable to erect or function, yet his beard remains, what is the reason? Why do eunuchs lose their beards? I wish to hear the explanation. Qibo answered: Eunuchs have their Zongjin (Genitals) removed, damaging the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). Blood flows out and cannot recover; internal skin binding occurs, and the lips and mouth are not nourished, hence facial hair does not grow. Huangdi asked: There are those born as Tianhuan (Congenital Eunuchs/Impotent men) who have never suffered injury nor lost blood, yet their facial hair does not grow. What is the reason? Qibo answered: This is due to congenital insufficiency. Their Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) are not vigorous, the Zongjin (Genitals) fail to form, there is Qi but no Blood, the lips and mouth are not nourished, hence facial hair does not grow. Huangdi said: How profound is the sage's understanding of all things! It is like the shadow following the light of the sun and moon, or the echo following the sound of drums. Hearing the sound allows one to know the shape. Without you, Master, who could elucidate the essence of all things? Therefore, the sage observes the complexion: Yellow and red indicate much Heat; green and white indicate little Heat; black indicates much Blood and little Qi. Those with beautiful eyebrows have abundant Blood in the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel; those with full sideburns and long beards have abundant Blood in the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel; those with handsome beards have abundant Blood in the Yangming (Bright Yang) channel. This is the general rule. The constant laws of the human body are: Taiyang (Greater Yang) usually has much Blood and little Qi; Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) usually has much Qi and little Blood; Yangming (Bright Yang) usually has much Blood and much Qi; Jueyin (Terminal Yin) usually has much Qi and little Blood; Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) usually has much Blood and little Qi; Taiyin (Greater Yin) usually has much Blood and little Qi. These are the natural constants. This passage seems to continue the unfinished meaning of the previous chapter. The combination of the Fifth Tone differs from the Upper Compilation and also differs from the *Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Da Lun* (Great Treatise on the Six Origins and Correct Ordinances); its guiding principle is not understood.
