Huangdi said: I wish to hear about the diffusion and spreading of pathogenic factors (Yin Xie Pan Yan). How does it occur? Qibo replied: Correct pathogenic factors invade from the exterior into the interior, but have not yet settled in a fixed location. Instead, they interfere with the Zang organs without a fixed abode, moving together with Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), and soaring along with the Hun (Ethereal Soul) and Po (Corporeal Soul). This causes restless sleep and frequent dreaming. If Qi overflows into the Fu organs, there is excess on the exterior and deficiency on the interior. If Qi overflows into the Zang organs, there is excess on the interior and deficiency on the exterior. Huangdi asked: Do these states of excess and deficiency have specific manifestations? Qibo said: When Yin Qi is excessive, one dreams of wading through large waters and feeling fearful. When Yang Qi is excessive, one dreams of large fires burning objects. When both Yin and Yang Qi are excessive, one dreams of killing each other. When Qi is excessive in the upper part, one dreams of flying. When Qi is excessive in the lower part, one dreams of falling. When extremely hungry, one dreams of taking things. When extremely full, one dreams of giving things. When Liver Qi is excessive, one dreams of anger. When Lung Qi is excessive, one dreams of fear, crying, or flying. When Heart Qi is excessive, one dreams of laughing easily or feeling afraid. When Spleen Qi is excessive, one dreams of singing and joy, and feels heavy-bodied and unable to lift oneself. When Kidney Qi is excessive, one dreams that the waist and spine feel separated and disconnected. For these twelve cases of excess, applying draining methods when the pathogen arrives will lead to immediate recovery.
If Jue Qi (Rebellious Qi) lodges in the Heart, one dreams of hills and smoke/fire. If it lodges in the Lung, one dreams of flying or seeing strange objects like gold, iron, or metal. If it lodges in the Liver, one dreams of forests and trees. If it lodges in the Spleen, one dreams of hills, large marshes, ruined houses, wind, and rain. If it lodges in the Kidney, one dreams of approaching an abyss or being submerged in water. If it lodges in the Bladder, one dreams of traveling. If it lodges in the Stomach, one dreams of eating and drinking. If it lodges in the Large Intestine, one dreams of fields. If it lodges in the Small Intestine, one dreams of crowded cities and crossroads. If it lodges in the Gallbladder, one dreams of fighting, lawsuits, or self-mutilation. If it lodges in the genitalia, one dreams of sexual intercourse. If it lodges in the neck, one dreams of beheading. If it lodges in the shins, one dreams of walking but being unable to move forward, or being deep underground in gardens. If it lodges in the thighs and arms, one dreams of performing etiquette, bowing, and rising. If it lodges in the Bao (Uterus/Lower Jiao), one dreams of urination and defecation. For these fifteen cases of deficiency, applying tonifying methods when the pathogen arrives will lead to immediate recovery.
The structure of this text resembles the two major parallel sections (Bi) of an eight-legged essay. Within each section, there are further sets of twelve and fifteen parallel lines, representing "large arrays enclosing small arrays" and "large camps enclosing small camps." The momentum of the writing is like an angry tide surging against a thousand troops, causing them to retreat.
