Joy and laughter both belong to the Fire of the Heart. This is because fire flares up when it meets wind, which is the image of laughter. In ancient times, a man who laughed incessantly with saliva flowing from the corners of his mouth was cured using Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) added with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), Zhuli (Bambusa Sap), and Jiangzhi (Zingiberis汁). A woman who laughed incessantly was cured by inducing vomiting with warm salt water, expelling five sheng (a traditional unit of volume) of hot phlegm. Anger arises when Yin Qi (Yin Energy) is excessive and obstructs Yang Qi (Yang Energy), preventing it from extending and venting outward. Zhu Danxi’s prescription for treating chronic anger consists of Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) ground into fine powder, six liang, taken five qian each time with plain boiled water; this embodies the principle of soothing the Liver and promoting the free flow of Qi. However, for those whose anger and irritability are triggered by events due to insufficiency of Yin in the Heart and Kidney, it is appropriate to nourish Liver Yin and Heart Blood, rather than using acrid-warm herbs that soothe the Liver and resolve stagnation.
Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler) governs the first half of the year (six months), while Zai Quan (Earthly Spring) governs the second half of the year (six months).
Zi and Wu years: Shaoyin Junhuo (Lesser Yin Sovereign Fire) is Si Tian, Yangming Zaojin (Greater Yang Dry Metal) is Zai Quan.
Mao and You years: Yangming Zaojin (Greater Yang Dry Metal) is Si Tian, Shaoyin Junhuo (Lesser Yin Sovereign Fire) is Zai Quan.
Chen and Xu years: Taiyang Hanshui (Greater Cold Water) is Si Tian, Taiyin Shitu (Greater Yin Damp Earth) is Zai Quan.
Chou and Wei years: Taiyin Shitu (Greater Yin Damp Earth) is Si Tian, Taiyang Hanshui (Greater Cold Water) is Zai Quan.
Yin and Shen years: Shaoyang Xianghuo (Lesser Minister Fire) is Si Tian, Jueyin Fengshui (Extreme Yin Wind-Water) is Zai Quan.
Si and Hai years: Jueyin Fengmu (Extreme Yin Wind-Wood) is Si Tian, Shaoyang Xianghuo (Lesser Minister Fire) is Zai Quan.
The rhyme states: Zi and Wu years have Shaoyin Junhuo as Si Tian, Yangming Zaojin should be Zai Quan; Chou and Wei years have Taiyin Shitu above, Taiyang Hanshui connects continuously below; Yin and Shen years see Shaoyang Xianghuo flourishing, Jueyin Fengmu links in the earth; Mao and You are inverted relative to Zi and Wu, while Chen-Xu and Si-Hai follow the same pattern.
Whenever the Yearly Movement (Yun) coincides with Si Tian, it is called "Tian Fu" (Heavenly符/Concordance). For example, in a Wood Yun year where Jueyin Fengmu is Si Tian; in a Fire Yun year where Shaoyin Junhuo or Shaoyang Xianghuo is Si Tian; in an Earth Yun year where Taiyin Shitu is Si Tian; in a Metal Yun year where Yangming Zaojin is Si Tian; in a Water Yun year where Taiyang Hanshui is Si Tian. Because in these five cases, Si Tian and Yun meet, Heaven's Qi descends, matching like a tally, hence named Tian Fu. Furthermore, the year directly governed by Yun is called "Sui Zhi" (Year Direct). For instance, in a Wood Yun year, the year corresponds to Hai, Mao; in a Fire Yun year, to Yin, Wu; in an Earth Yun year, to Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei; in a Metal Yun year, to Si, You; in a Water Yun year, to Shen, Zi. These five correspondences are what the year directly holds, thus called Cheng Sui, or Sui Zhi. Additionally, in a Fire Yun year, if Shaoyin Junhuo appears above and the year branch is Wu; in an Earth Yun year, if Taiyin Shitu appears above and the year branch is Chou or Wei; in a Metal Yun year, if Yangming Zaojin appears above and the year branch is You. These three cases represent the convergence of Heavenly Qi, Yun, and the Year Branch, hence called "San He Wei Zhi" (Three Harmonies for Governance). However, Sui Zhi is also called Sui Wei, and San He is also considered Tian Fu. The *Liu Wei Zhi Da Lun* states: When Tian Fu and Sui Hui (Year Assembly) coincide, it is called "Tai Yi Tian Fu" (Supreme One Heavenly Concordance), meaning Heavenly Yun and Sui Hui meet. Among Tian Fu years, Ji-Chou, Ji-Wei, Wu-Wu, and Yi-You; and among Sui Hui years, Wu-Wu, Ji-Chou, Ji-Wei, and Yi-You, all share identical Tian Fu and Sui Hui attributes, collectively named Tai Yi Tian Fu. "Tai Yi" denotes supreme uniqueness without rival. Differentiating their hierarchy: Tian Fu years are like ministers enforcing law; since law cannot be compromised, when pathogenic factors strike such ministers, the disease is rapid and critical. For example, on Wu-Zi day, Wu represents Fire Yun and Zi represents Fire Qi, constituting Tian Fu. Illness contracted on this day, influenced by the semi-year assembly, resembles ministers executing orders under authority; thus, when pathogens strike executors, the disease is slow and persistent. For example, in Jia-Chen year, Jia represents Earth Yun and Chen represents Earth Branch, constituting Sui Hui. If Year, Month, Day, and Hour align with Tai Yi Tian Fu years, it is akin to encountering noble lords or rulers; thus, when pathogens strike nobility, the disease is sudden and fatal. For instance, on Wu-Wu day, Wu represents Fire Yun, Wu represents Fire Branch and Fire Qi, forming Tai Yi Tian Fu; illness contracted on this day leads to death.
