The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: The tongue is the sprout (external manifestation) of the Heart. It also states: The center corresponds to yellow, internally connecting to the Spleen, opening into the mouth, and storing essence in the Spleen; therefore, diseases manifest on the tongue. Furthermore, it states: The Heart meridian connects to the root of the tongue, and the Spleen meridian links to the sides of the tongue and ties to the underside of the tongue. Thus, when disease arises, sores may appear, or conditions such as double tongue (Chong She) and wooden tongue (Mu She) may occur, all caused by disorders of these two meridians. However, the Liver meridian also links to the root of the tongue. Therefore, if struck by wind-cold, the tongue curls up and speech is lost; if depressed by the seven emotions, heat-swelling becomes full and does not subside; Heart-heat causes cracking and sores; Spleen-heat causes slipperiness and coating; Spleen closure results in a white coating like snow; Liver stagnation with heat causes blood to rush upward. If the tongue suddenly becomes numb and obstructed without cause, it should not be treated as wind-heat, but rather due to insufficiency of Heart-blood, where blood deficiency leads to fire scorching; this should be treated with Lizhong Tang combined with Siwu Tang.
In the past, someone had sores on the tongue that eroded into holes over time. Cooling medicines were ineffective. This was due to deficiency-cold in the lower origin, with deficient fire failing to descend. After administering Yangzheng Dan, he recovered.
