Budding Nut (Celtis sinensis) Fruit absorbs the Qi of Earth in its generation, thus its flavor is sweet, its nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its ability to treat edema and fill out the skin and muscles are all evidences of its efficacy in tonifying the Spleen and consolidating the Earth element. Its ability to strengthen Yin, treat impotence, and improve vision stems from the function where a solid Spleen generates Essence and pours it into the Kidney. Consequently, the Five Zang Organs become solid, strength increases, bones and tendons grow strong, complexion becomes radiant, and the body feels light.
Budding Nut (Celtis sinensis) Fruit primarily treats edema, fills out the skin and muscles, assists the waist and knees, boosts energy, strengthens Yin to treat impotence, tonifies deficiency and exhaustion, makes the complexion radiant, lightens the body, strengthens bones and tendons, and improves vision. Chopping official seal paper made from Budding Nut bark, burning it, and swallowing it has miraculous effects for treating difficult labor in women.
Huai Shi (Sophora japonica Fruit) perceives the Yin-cold Qi of Heaven and Earth, combining the transformations of Wood and Water; thus, its flavors are bitter, sour, and salty, its nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and additionally enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. As a drug that is purely bitter, cold, and Yin, it is an essential product for cooling blood, capable of removing all heat, dissipating all knots, and clearing all fire. The Huai flower's flavor is predominantly bitter, so it is particularly effective in clearing heat from the Hand-Yangming, Foot-Yangming, and Foot-Jueyin meridians.
Huai Shi removes pathogenic heat from the five internal organs, treats swelling and pain of the five types of hemorrhoids, cools the large intestine, and resolves breast masses (Ru Jia). For men with persistent dampness, dryness, and itching in the genital area, and for women with unbearable pain and itching in the vaginal canal after childbirth, as well as for treating fire sores, it is effective. It can induce abortion; swallowing seven grains with wine for inducing labor yields remarkable results. The Huai flower tastes very bitter; when stir-fried until yellow, it cools the large intestine, removes heat to regulate intestinal wind (hematochezia), stops bleeding from hemorrhoids, and treats both white and red dysentery. It can also relieve sudden epigastric pain and kill roundworms in the abdomen and viscera. However, patients with deficiency-cold constitutions, spleen-stomach weakness causing diarrhea, and those with Yin deficiency with internal heat should avoid taking it. The branches are mainly used for washing sores and treating dampness and itching of the scrotum. The bark is mainly used for bathing ulcerated sores. The roots are mainly used to treat throat obstruction (Hou Bi) accompanied by chills and fever. Decoction of the leaves treats infantile convulsions with high fever, tinea, and carbuncles. Earwood growing on the tree, burned to ash and taken with water, effectively treats heart pain caused by insect bites, as well as intestinal hemorrhoids and hematochezia.
The *Daqing Caomu Fang* states: "The Huai tree is the essence of the Xu Star. Collecting its fruit on the Shangsi day in the tenth lunar month and consuming it can remove hundred diseases, promote longevity, and connect with the divine." Additionally, the *Book of Liang* records: Geng Jianwu frequently consumed Huai Shi, and at over seventy years old, his hair and sideburns remained black, and his eyesight was sharp enough to read fine print, which is verification of its efficacy.
