The formulas and theories for smallpox and measles (Douzhen) are the most difficult to understand, and the complicated conditions mixed within them differ as much as heaven and earth. For instance, vomiting and diarrhea (Tuxie) appearing at the initial stage versus appearing during the suppuration stage have vastly different severities. Therefore, Zhang separated each case individually, daring not to mix them together.
In the compilation of Douzhen methods, Volume One serves as the General Introduction to Smallpox, discussing the origin of smallpox, explaining deficiency and excess (Xu Shi), favorable and unfavorable courses (Shun Ni), the main aspects of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) locations, and various names of atypical smallpox.
Volumes Twenty-Two and Twenty-Three constitute the General Discussion on Key Points of Smallpox, elaborating on various essentials within smallpox and miscellaneous conditions at the beginning and end stages that cannot be classified into a single category; all are compiled herein. Processes such as fever onset, appearance of spots (Jian Dian), swelling (Qi Zhang), pus filling (Guan Nong Jiang), scabbing (Shou Ye Jie Jia) can all be consulted in these two volumes.
Volume Twenty-Four focuses on Observation Methods for Verification, detailing the shape, color, and trend of the rash, diet and voice, as well as auspicious or ominous signs in the complexion of the whole body.
Volume Twenty-Five covers the Fever Onset Section (Fare Men). It first exhaustively presents ancient philosophers' discussions on this section, then lists complicated conditions mixed with this section, followed by the favorable, unfavorable, and dangerous situations across the three days (San Zhao Shun Ni Xian Sui Jin), and finally appends songs summarizing prognosis and treatment for this section.
Volume Twenty-Six covers the Spot Appearance Section (Jian Dian Men), following the same compilation method as the Fever Onset Section.
Volume Twenty-Seven covers the Swelling Section (Qi Zhang Men), following the same compilation method as the Fever Onset Section.
Volume Twenty-Eight covers the Pus Filling Section (Guan Nang Men), following the same compilation method as the Fever Onset Section.
Volume Twenty-Nine covers the Scabbing Section (Shou Ye Men), following the same compilation method as the Fever Onset Section.
Volume Thirty covers the Scab Falling Section (Luo Jia Men), following the same compilation method as the Fever Onset Section. For complicated conditions in the above sections that could not be fully recorded, one should refer to the General Discussion on Key Points of Smallpox.
Volume Thirty-One covers the Residual Toxin Section (Yu Du Men), listing relevant discussions first, followed by songs on syndrome differentiation and treatment.
Volume Thirty-two covers Discussions on Smallpox and Ulcers in Gynecology, along with songs on syndrome differentiation and treatment.
Volume Thirty-Three covers the Measles Section (Ma Zhen Men). Initially, it lists various discussions on this section, then lists complicated and transmitted conditions, followed by favorable, unfavorable, and dangerous situations (Sui Jin), and songs on syndrome differentiation and treatment, appending waterpox and macules at the end.
Volume Thirty-Four covers the Smallpox and Measles Section (Dou Zhen Men), compiling various formulas from ancient philosophers.
Volume Thirty-Five is the Supplement to Smallpox and Measles, supplementing meanings and treatments left incomplete in previous books. It addresses critical conditions like Qi deficiency and Blood heat (Qi Xu Xue Re), listing formulas item by item and explaining flexible medication based on symptoms.
Zhang painstakingly collected and compiled this book, regardless of cold or heat, for thirty years. He completed works including *Synopsis of Neijing*, *Comprehensive Reference for Miscellaneous Diseases and Essential Gynecology*, *Complete Collection of Douzhen*, *Essentials of Surgery*, *Complete Collection of Douzhen*, *Combined Reference of Surgical Pulse Diagnosis and Herb Properties* with appended Medical Formula Examination, organizing empirical formulas according to herb processing methods. Topics covered include pregnancy, childbirth, fertility, and cultivation of stillness, categorized meticulously without omission. From heaven and earth to humanity, from small matters to large, from men to women, from internal organs to external body, from form to pulse, from herbs to medicine, the essence of all books has been thoroughly adopted. This is truly an unprecedented work, a complete encyclopedia of medicine, and a comprehensive guide for health preservation. Driven by an urgent desire to save lives, Zhang wished to make this book public. Gentlemen who respect life may keep it as a treasure on their desks; later virtuous scholars in the medical field may regard it as a rare gem in their chests. I privately reflect that human life is limited, and moments pass like mirages. If one drifts with the world without leaving any tangible achievements, ending up rotting alongside common objects, how can one not feel guilty? The manuscript was weak, making progress difficult. Mistakenly trusting a printer's claim of movable type invention, he exhausted his spirit and energy, completing it in two years, but the text was sparse while ink usage was high, lacking durability. As seekers increased daily, fearing decades of blood and sweat would flow away once the plates were discarded and the book finished, in the Renwu year, he entered the capital again, vowing to complete this collection. He endured the hardships of travel day and night, struggled to secure printing funds, stayed up late studying hard, checked for errors disregarding his life, until the book was finally completed. He only hopes that future scholars will sincerely strive for advancement, so that the Way of Qi Bo and Huang Di will be further illuminated, the views of many sages will be preserved, and through divine clarity, descendants will bathe in the nurturing spring breeze, truly benefiting the world indefinitely.
