Lilu (Veratrum nigrum Rhizome) is born from the qi of Fire and Metal; therefore, its taste is bitter and acrid, its nature is slightly cold, and it is toxic. The bitter taste acts as an emetic, thus expelling pathogenic factors, phlegm-heat, and diseases in the chest and diaphragm regions through vomiting. Bitterness can drain heat, so it primarily treats intestinal dysentery (Changpi), scalp ulcers with itching (Touyangchuang Sao), and malignant sores, killing various insect poisons. However, its taste is extremely bitter, causing immediate vomiting upon entering the mouth; therefore, it is not used in decoctions. It is only suitable for patients who have ingested insect poisons or evil qi, or who have phlegm-fluid retention in the chest, utilizing its upward-emetic force to achieve temporary efficacy. Otherwise, it will merely cause chest oppression and confusion, incessant vomiting, and severely damage body fluids; caution is required.
Lilu is incompatible with Wushen (Five Ginsengs: Renshen, Danshen, Shashen, Xuanshen, Kushen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix). It should only be used in powder form and must not be decocted. It induces vomiting of wind-phlegm in the upper diaphragm, treats hidden wind epilepsy, primarily addresses alopecia, scabies, and ulcers, treats intestinal dysentery, kills various insect poisons, removes dead flesh, cures malignant carbuncles, relieves throat obstruction (Houbi) due to blockage, and wind-phlegm surging upward: it can also treat horse涂抹 tinea (Matuxuan) and be applied externally to treat scrofulous ulcers (Madao Lanchuang).
Langdangzi (Hyoscyami Semen), also known as Tianxianzi, is toxic. It primarily treats wind epilepsy, mania, damp-bi with stiffness and spasm, aids in strengthening the legs for walking, treats dental caries, and long-term use lightens the body, enabling speed comparable to flying horses. Roasted, it is beneficial; raw, it causes purging. "Bieshuo" states that even after boiling for one or two days, it can still sprout when planted in soil; users should exercise prudence.
Also known as Qianjinzi or Judongshi. Its taste is acrid, its nature is warm, and it is toxic. Its acrid-warm nature attacks accumulations, distension, fullness, and stagnations such as phlegm-fluid. It uses toxicity to combat toxicity, dispelling gu poison, ghostly infections, and other evils. It is a drug of attack and depletion. It is strictly contraindicated for those with deficient Yuanqi, weak Spleen and Stomach, or loose stools. The oil should be removed before medicinal use.
Xuisui Zi (Euphorbiae Lathyridis Fructus) treats all types of retained stagnation and accumulations, is applied externally to various scabies, tinea, and malignant sores, promotes urination and unblocks the Large and Small Intestines, disperses qi to relieve epigastric and abdominal pain, expels insect poisons and ghostly infections, resolves masses and fixed lumps (Pi Jia Zheng), and regulates menstruation. When used to descend phlegm-fluid, it must not be taken in excess to avoid toxicity harming the person.
Bibo (Long Pepper Fruit) digests retained food, directs qi downward, eliminates stomach cold, warms the middle, instantly drives away Pi Yin hernia pain, dispels cold qi in cholera, stops watery diarrhea and deficiency-type dysentery, and arrests vomiting and acid regurgitation. When combined with Jiang (Ginger), He (Chebulae Fructus), Shen (Ginseng), and Gui (Cinnamon Twig) to make pills, it is miraculously effective for treating visceral deficiency-cold, borborygmus, and dysentery. Long-term use damages the eyes and leaks True Yang.
