Treats cough caused by Lung Qi deficiency.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huang [Note: Likely a typo for Huangqi or similar, kept as 'Huang' per source], Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Wuweizi (Stir-bred Schisandra Fruit), Ziwan (Aster Root) (each 1 qian); Sangbaipi (Honey-fried Mulberry Root Bark), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (each 2 qian). Add a small amount of honey, mix well, and take orally.
The reason for using Renshen in cases of Lung deficiency is that the Spleen is the Mother of the Lung, and Qi is considered the Mother of Wood [Textual note: "Qi is the mother of wood" is retained as per original text]. The reason for using Shudihuang is that the Kidney is the Child of the Lung; when the Child organ is deficient, it inevitably steals Qi from the Mother organ to nourish itself. Therefore, Kidney-tonifying herbs are used first to nourish Water, and Shudihuang is also an excellent product for resolving phlegm. Zhu Danxi stated: By nourishing Water to control Ministerial Fire, the phlegm will naturally be eliminated. Coughing injures Lung Qi; Wuweizi is sour and warm, capable of consolidating Lung Qi. Cough arises from excessive Fire; Sangbaipi is sweet and cold, capable of draining Lung Fire. Ziwan is pungent to moisten the Lung and warm to tonify deficiency. Combined, they are named "Bu Fei Tang" (Lung-Tonifying Decoction), aiming to strengthen Water to control Fire, so that coughing stops naturally.
Treats chronic cough with phlegm lasting for a long time.
Erdao Cao (Farfarae Flos/Folium mixture? Note: Erdao Cao usually refers to Farfarae Flos), Kundonghua (Farfarae Flos) (each 2 qian), Eguan Shi (Otolithus/Calculus Bovis substitute? Note: Eguan Shi is Calcitum/Eguan Stone), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 5 fen). Grind into fine powder. Brush egg white onto paper, roll the powder inside the paper to form a tube, ignite the smoke, and inhale the smoke into the throat via the mouth. Finally, swallow with a decoction of fine tea and fresh ginger.
Treats simultaneous Cold of the Lung and Stomach, with incessant coughing.
Zhi Gancao (Fired Licorice Root), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizoma soaked in hot water), Fuling (Poria), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, not fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Bei Wuweizi (Schisandra Chinensis Fruit), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (equal parts). Take 3 qian each time, decoct with water containing fresh ginger and jujube, and drink.
Treats elderly patients suffering from chronic pulmonary asthma, incessant coughing, and restless sleep.
Xingren (Apricot Seed, skin and tip removed), Hutao Rou (Walnut Kernel, soaked in hot water, skin and membrane removed) (equal parts). Grind these into a paste, add refined honey, and form pills the size of a bullet. Take one or two pills each time, chew thoroughly after meals and before bedtime, and swallow with ginger water.
Another prescription:
For expelling phlegm.
Renshen (with rhizome/Lu), Lilu (Veratrum Root) (each 2 qian), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, skin and strings removed, soaked, 1 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, skin removed), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, soil removed, each 1.5 qian). Use one bowl of sour plum water, take warm after meals. Wait until phlegm is expectorated and the chest feels refreshed. Then, sip cold scallion water occasionally, stopping when vomiting ceases.
