Gu Jing Cao (Erythronium Seed / Flower of Erythronium):
Gu Jing Cao is born from the Qi of Metal, therefore its taste is pungent, its nature is slightly warm, and it is non-toxic. After harvesting grain in the fields, the grain in lower-lying areas rots due to water immersion. Gu Jing Cao grows by absorbing the residual Qi of this grain; it likely also embodies the harmonious Qi of Heaven and Earth. It primarily enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and also enters the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It supplements Liver Qi and is an essential herb for treating eye diseases. Its pungency can dissipate nodules, and its warmth can promote circulation, thus it is effective in treating toothache caused by wind-fire, throat obstruction (sore throat with swelling and blockage), blood heat, and sores/ulcers characterized by pain and itching. By entering the Liver and supplementing Liver Qi, it treats corneal nebulae (cloudy vision) with a feeling of foreign body sensation, excessive tearing and blurred vision, nyctalopia (night blindness) where one cannot see at night, eye damage in children suffering from infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome), and all types of corneal scars after smallpox/variolous eruptions, achieving miraculous effects.
Gu Jing Cao treats corneal nebulae in the eyes, all types of corneal scars, foreign body sensation, excessive tearing, blurred vision, and nyctalopia. For eyes damaged by turbid pathogens, Zhu Gan San (Pork Liver Powder) serves as the principal formula; when variolous spots enter the eyes, Tu Fen Wan (Rabbit Excrement Pill) must include it; for toothache and throat obstruction caused by wind-fire, it is also suitable for primary treatment.
Main Indications (referencing *Dou Zhen He Can*): Its main functions are to brighten the eyes and remove nebulae on the skin and eyes, especially crucial for corneal scars. There is a usage involving rabbit excrement because rabbits are fond of eating this herb. However, if the herb has not yet sprouted above ground, the rabbit excrement should not be used.
She Gan (Belamcanda Rhizome / Blackberry Lily Rhizome):
She Gan is also known as Zi Hu Die Hua (Purple Butterfly Flower). Its rhizome inherits the Qi of Metal combined with Fire. The interaction between Metal and Fire results in a bitter and pungent taste, a slightly cold nature, and toxicity. It enters the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian, and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Bitterness can drain downwards, and pungency can disperse effectively; thus, it resolves phlegm accumulation in the Taiyin Lung and Jueyin Liver meridians, causing nodules (such as lymphatic swellings) to dissipate naturally. Dampness from the Foot Jueyin Liver meridian flowing downward, triggered by fatigue, manifests as bi du (inguinal lymphadenitis); old blood stasis between the Heart and Spleen causes coughing up of sputum and foul breath odor. She Gan disperses hot qi in the chest, treats throat obstruction and sore throat, eliminates blood stasis, removes "Mao Mu" (splenomegaly resulting from chronic malaria), all through its actions of resolving phlegm, draining heat, and dissipating nodules. However, it has draining properties but no tonifying properties; therefore, long-term use leads to deficiency.
She Gan clears heat, resolves phlegm, expels blood stasis, and removes dampness. It stops stabbing pain caused by throat obstruction, reduces nodular hard swelling, treats Mao Mu, and promotes the flow of accumulated phlegm. It is an essential herb for treating throat ulcers and sore throats. It can drain excess fire, hence its efficacy is prominent in the Upper Jiao (Heart and Lungs). Since it cannot nourish Yin, long-term use leads to bodily deficiency.
Main Indications (referencing *Dou Zhen He Can*): It treats throat obstruction and sore throat caused by variolous eruptions, leading to difficulty in breathing or swallowing. For nodules appearing after the resolution of variolous eruptions, it is used to dissipate nodules and reduce swelling. When used, the root nodes/stems should be removed, sliced, soaked in Licorice Water, dried, and then administered.
