Ye Lang Du (Cynanchum paniculatum), breaks up accumulations, phlegm masses, and abdominal lumps; removes malignant sores, rat fistulas, carbuncles, and abscesses; expels cough with counterflow of Qi; kills insect toxins and so-called "ghost essences"; capable of harming even beasts and birds.
It grows by sensing Yin-cold Qi, thus its taste is pungent, nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. Generally, insect toxins are created by pungent-warm substances, therefore bitter-cold herbs are suitable to drain their heat-toxin. Once the heat-toxin is resolved, the insects lose their efficacy, let alone those born from damp-heat? This herb possesses spiritual properties among plants, hence also known as Xian Zhao Zi, Sheng Zhi Zi, or Sheng Xian Zi. People in Shu consider it precious and rare. It is said that if two seeds are pinned to the collar, they make a sound when encountering insects, allowing one to know beforehand. They have a shell, and the fruit resembles Gleditsia sinensis seed. For medicinal use, remove the shell, grind into powder, and take orally. Its root is bitter in taste and extremely cold in nature, acting even faster; mountain people call it Sheng Wu You. Harvested in winter, dried in shade, pounded into powder in a stone mortar, decocted in water, and taken orally. It miraculously treats poisoning by insect toxins and evil influences, epidemic warm diseases, relieves restlessness, promotes urination, and when applied externally, treats all snake, insect, and silkworm bites.
Yu Zhi Zi (Akebia quinata), must be peeled, finely ground, and taken with liquid decoction for administration. It kills insects, dispels gu-poisons, and drives away various toxic pathogens. However, due to its bitter-cold nature which promotes diuresis, patients with Spleen deficiency leading to diarrhea should not take it. Decocting the root in water yields particularly rapid effects.
Yu Zhi Zi Wan (Pre-knowing Seed Pill), treats Heart Qi insufficiency, mental vagueness, confused and delirious speech, palpitations with irritability and depression, sorrow and grief, frequent anger and fear, forgetfulness, insomnia, vivid strange dreams at night, waking in terror from nightmares, or sudden outbreaks of mania, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. All these conditions are suitable for this Yu Zhi Zi pill. Formula: Yu Zhi Zi (peeled), Bai Fu Ling (Poria cocos), Gou Qi Zi (Lycium barbarum), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus tatarinowii), Fu Shen (Poria with hostwood), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Ren Shen (Panax ginseng), Di Gu Pi (Lycium bark), Yuan Zhi (Polygala root), Shan Yao (Dioscorea opposita), Huang Jing (Polygonatum sibiricum), Dan Sha (Cinnabar) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Euryale ferox seeds. Chew one pill per dose, taken down with Ren Shen decoction.
Fang Kui (Adenophora stricta), primarily treats heat accumulation in the Bladder and dysuria (difficulty in urination); manages ghost malaria and epilepsy; addresses fright, evil influences, manic running; regulates hernia, abdominal lumps, and intestinal diarrhea; disperses fullness in the lower abdomen; strengthens willpower, eliminates Kidney pathogenic factors, tonifies Qi, and strengthens tendons and bones. For blood-Qi tumors as large as a bowl, applying vinegar paste topically can dissipate them. Those suffering from Fire-pathogen excess must not take it, as it may cause hallucinations resembling seeing ghosts.
