The verse states: When the smallpox lesions appear in the Qian sector (northwest), the condition is relatively mild; when they first appear in the Kan sector (due north), it is inevitably ominous; a partial appearance in the Gen sector (northeast) indicates three parts severity; an appearance in the Zhen sector (due east) is auspicious and causes joy; appearances in the Li sector (due south) and Xun sector (southeast) reaching nine parts indicate extreme danger; an appearance in the Kun sector (southwest) constitutes a counter-flow syndrome, truly alarming; only an appearance in the Dui sector (due west) is truly auspicious. One must clearly distinguish the fortune and misfortune among the eight trigrams.
Xuanjing Smallpox (Hanging Mirror Smallpox): This type of smallpox deviates from the toxicity of the Three Yin meridians, gathering at the five Shu points of the zang-fu organs, resembling a carbuncle on the back. This is the first type unrecognized. Its symptoms necessarily include restlessness, delirious speech, aversion to thirst, vomiting, and a body hot as fire.
Xiezi Smallpox (Scorpion Smallpox): This type of smallpox travels through the Liver meridian, with枭毒 (ominous toxicity) accumulating in the left hypochondrium. The lesions are as large as typical smallpox pustules, with smaller ones surrounding them like pearls. This is the second type unrecognized. Its symptoms necessarily include dry mouth and thirst, restlessness, vomiting, regurgitation, and mental agitation.
Fufu Smallpox (Overturned Cauldron Smallpox): This type of smallpox gathers the Qi of all Yang meridians, rotating and connecting continuously, while the lower part has none. Its symptoms include vomiting, headache, and a shape resembling alopecia barbae or tinea capitis. This is the third type unrecognized.
Suo Jing Smallpox (Locked Well Smallpox): This type of smallpox toxicity gathers in the Spleen collaterals, clustering around the lips in countless rotations. This is the fourth type unrecognized. Its symptoms necessarily include difficulty swallowing due to tongue stiffness and restless sleep.
Panshe Smallpox (Coiling Snake Smallpox): This type of smallpox toxicity stagnates in the Lung collaterals, coiling around the neck and nape, resembling scrofula. This is the fifth type unrecognized. Its symptoms include tight phlegm and saliva, red eyes, and aversion to thirst.
Huanhu Smallpox (Taming Tiger Smallpox): This type of smallpox toxicity gathers in the Stomach and Spleen, winding and knotting around the umbilicus. This is the sixth type unrecognized. Its symptoms include abdominal colic, diarrhea, vomiting and regurgitation, cold limbs, and aversion to cold.
Xuanqiu Smallpox (Dark Hill Smallpox): This type of smallpox travels from the Heart meridian to the Kidney meridian, with toxicity gathering at the genitalia, resembling ymei chuang (chancroid/kindred sores). This is the seventh type unrecognized. Its symptoms include lower abdominal distension and stuffiness, painful and scanty dark urine, thirst, and fever.
Yanyue Smallpox (Moon-Hiding Smallpox): This type of smallpox travels through the Yangming meridians, gathering in the hollows of both axillae, locking fifteen or sixteen lesions. It causes pain in the arms when hanging down. Its symptoms include spitting saliva, aversion to heat, and facial redness. This is the eighth type unrecognized.
Juan'ao Smallpox (Rolling Slope Smallpox): This type of smallpox involves Spleen toxicity, with four or five lesions clustering together on the palms where the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian ends. This is the ninth type unrecognized. Its symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and restlessness.
