When pathogenic factors invade the three Yang meridians, pain occurs. When cold pathogens contend, tendons become tense; when wind pathogens contend, tendons become flaccid. The left side is mostly related to blood, while the right side is mostly related to phlegm. Zhu Danxi treated such conditions using Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction), adding wine-processed Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Honghua (Carthami Flos). After taking two doses, the patient recovered. Cases of neck stiffness and pain caused by sprains or sleeping in an awkward position are all due to Kidney deficiency failing to nourish the tendons. Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) can be used with added Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix).
For headache unceasing due to wind-heat attacking upward:
Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 1.5 qian). Decoct with ginger water and take orally.
For a sensation of heaviness in the head:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Hongdou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum). These three herbs in equal proportions are ground into powder and insufflated into the nose.
Another prescription:
For headache radiating to eye pain, this is caused by wind-phlegm attacking upward. Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) must be used to open the orifices.
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bencao (Ligustici Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yuqianya Cha (Camelliae Sinensis Folium Pre-Qingming) (each in equal proportions). Decoct with water and take orally.
For unbearable severe headache:
Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) (10 pieces), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (2 qian), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) (plump ones, skin and seeds scraped off, 2 liang). Grind into powder, make pills with water into small cakes, size of apricot kernels. When using, have the patient lie supine. Dissolve the cake with water, insert into the nostril via a bamboo tube (left for males, right for females). When the patient feels the medicinal taste reaching the throat with slight sourness, have them sit up. Have them bite firmly on a piece of copper or iron placed against the incisors. When saliva flows out like a basin, the condition will be cured.
For headache and body heaviness due to dampness, with extreme dizziness and pain:
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Decoct with ginger and jujube water and take orally.
For headache due to Qi deficiency. This prescription raises Yang and tonifies Qi, leading to self-healing.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (stir-fried with honey, 0.7 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 0.5 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 0.3 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus) (each 0.2 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma). Decoct with water and take after meals.
For headache due to Blood deficiency:
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Decoct with water and take orally. Another prescription adds Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) with heart and pistil removed.
