Wang Shuhe advocated treating based on the Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Heel Vessel), Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel), Yin Wei Mai (Yin Linking Vessel), and Du Mai (Governing Vessel). These are detailed in *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) and Li Shizhen’s *Qijing Bakmai Kao* (Examination of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels); they should be consulted.
Zhang Shiwan stated: For epilepsy (Xian Zheng) manifesting during the day, moxibustion on the Yang Qiao Mai is indicated, and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Yizhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) is suitable. For epilepsy manifesting at night, moxibustion on the Yin Qiao Mai is indicated, and Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) with added Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) is suitable.
Xue Shi stated: Whenever this condition occurs, two to three days before an impending attack, one should first inspect the area between the high bone behind the ear for visible blue vein patterns. Breaking these veins to induce bleeding can prevent the subsequent affliction.
Zhang Shiwan stated: The onset of epilepsy is caused by the ascent of the Minister Fire (Dragon Fire) from the Kidney, accompanied and assisted by the Thunder Fire of the Liver. It is solely due to internal stirring of Liver Wind that convulsions and spasms occur; at this time, the essential fatty fluids of the entire body are forced upward and vomited out through the mouth along with the rebellious Qi. If Yin Qi is deficient and cannot remain tranquil internally, it attaches to Yang Qi and ascends, resulting in heat above and cold below. If Yang Qi is deficient and cannot circulate and protect the body, it sinks downward following Yin, resulting in heat below and cold above.
Danggui Chengqi Tang (from *Mizhuan Fang*)
Treats men and women suffering from phlegm misting the Heart orifices, manifesting as behaviors such as climbing walls, jumping over barriers, and speaking nonsense.
Ingredients: Danggui Wei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root) (1 liang), Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome and Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, washed with wine), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Houpo (Magnolia Bark) (each 5 qian), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) (3 qian).
Preparation: Decoct in three cups of water until reduced to eight-tenths; take orally.
Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction)
Luo Shi stated in *Neijing Shiyi*: The cause of Dian Kuang (Manic-Depressive Psychosis) is always due to Gallbladder fluid overflowing onto the Heart, causing the Spirit to lose its residence; therefore, it is appropriate to Warm the Gallbladder. This formula also treats Xian Bing (Epilepsy).
It consists of Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) plus Xian Zhuru (Fresh Bamboo Shavings) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), each 2 qian, or mixed with Fei Fan (Calcined Alum) half a qian.
Cizhu Wan (Magnetite and Millet Pill) (Formula seen in *Shifang Miaoyong*)
Treats Dian Bing (Depressive Psychosis), Kuang Bing (Manic Psychosis), and Xian Bing (Epilepsy) with miraculous efficacy.
Shan Qi (Hernia), characterized by swelling of the testicles and pain radiating to the lower abdomen. Zhu Danxi stated: It exclusively belongs to the Liver Meridian. Zhang Jingyue stated: The disease name is Shan Qi because treating hernia requires first regulating Qi. Generally, Cold Hernia involves Cold Qi, Heat Hernia involves Heat Qi, Damp Hernia involves Damp Qi, and Rebellious Hernia involves Rebellious Qi; all should be treated concurrently with Qi-regulating herbs.
Changsun Nan Xindian’s commentary: Although there are seven types of hernia named Cold, Water, Tendon, Qi, Blood, Fox, and Lei, their treatment methods do not exceed warming the meridians and dispersing cold, eliminating dampness and moving Qi, invigorating blood, guiding fire downward, and softening hardness. *Bencao BieLu* states: Using Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) added with Mutong (Akebia Stem), Chuanlianzi (Szechwan Chinaberry Seed), Juhe (Tangerine Seed), and Muxiang (Costus Root) to treat them comprehensively is indeed concise and followable. If using Kulianzi Wan (Toosendan Pill) or Sansheng Huixiang San (Three-Layer Fennel Powder), these are formulated for chronic cases that do not heal. The wash formula from *Qianjin Yi* is formulated for acute severe pain approaching death; this must be known. Lei (Mass) is the female equivalent of hernia.
