Wherever the Tai Shen (Fetal Guardian Spirit) resides, renovation or construction should be avoided. Even if neighbors are working, pregnant women must stay away. Otherwise, even if miscarriage does not occur, it may cause fetal deformity, manifesting as bluish complexion, muscle spasms, blocked orifices, and premature death.
Tai Shen Locations:
In the first month, it is in the bed; second month, at the window; third month, in the hall doorway; fourth month, at the stove; fifth month, on the bed; sixth month, in the bed storage; seventh month, at the mortar and pestle; eighth month, at the toilet door; ninth month, in the gatehouse; tenth month, in the bedroom; eleventh month, at the furnace; twelfth month, in the bed. On Zi and Chou days, it is in the central hall; on Yin, Mao, Chen, and You days, it is at the stove; on Si and Wu days, it is at the door; on Wei and Shen days, it is under the fence; on Xu and Hai days, it is in the room. The best approach to these taboos is to refrain from all repairs.
You Shen (Wandering God) Locations:
On Gui Si, Jia Wu, Ji Wei, Bing Shen, and Ding You days, it is in the north of the room; on Gui Mao day, it is in the west of the room; on Jia Chen, Yi Si, Bing Wu, and Ding Wei days, it is in the east of the room; on Liu Xu and Liu Si days, it is in the center of the room; on Geng Zi, Xin Chou, and Ren Yin days, it is in the south of the room. In places where the You Shen resides, one must avoid installing beds, changing curtains, or placing heavy objects on the bed, as this will surely lead to miscarriage.
Childbirth Direction:
On Zi, Wu, Mao, and You days, the southwest direction is suitable; on Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai days, the northwest direction is suitable; on Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei days, the southeast direction is suitable. For difficult labor, wash the umbilicus, abdomen, and vulva with a decoction of Perilla Leaf (Ephedrae Herba is mentioned in source text as 'Su Ye' which is Perillae Folium, but WHO standard for Su Ye is Perillae Folium. Note: Source says 'Su Ye', I will use Perillae Folium).
Method for Burying the Placenta:
It should be buried above the Sheng Qi (Vital Energy) direction. In the first month, the Zi direction; second month, Chou; third month, Yin; fourth month, Mao; fifth month, Chen; sixth month, Si; seventh month, Wu; eighth month, Wei; ninth month, Shen; tenth month, You; eleventh month, Xu; twelfth month, Hai. If the Sheng Qi direction is inconvenient, bury it according to the calendar in the directions of Zoushu, Boshi, or Yuede. Avoid burying it in the Kong Wang, San Sha, or Tai Sui directions. It is incorrect to throw it into rivers as is common custom.
Observing Infant Complexion:
Liver Qi manifests as green/blue; Heart Qi as red; Spleen Qi as yellow; Lung Qi as white; Kidney Qi as black. Any disease presentation lacking yellow in the complexion is incurable. White face in Spring, Black in Summer, Red in Autumn, and Yellow in Winter are adverse signs.
Divide by location: The left cheek corresponds to the Azure Dragon and Liver, matching Spring; green indicates excess. The right cheek corresponds to the White Tiger and Lung, matching Autumn; white indicates deficiency. The Tian Ting (Forehead) is high and Li Yang (corresponds to Summer, red indicates Heart Heat); red signifies intense heat, while blue/green indicates Liver Wind. Cyan at the Yin Tang (between eyebrows) indicates fright; red and white indicate Water-Fire fright; red indicates Phlegm-Heat; red from Yin Tang to Zhun Tou (Nose Tip) indicates accumulation of Heat in the Triple Burner; red from Yin Tang to Shan Gen (Nasal Root) indicates Heat in the Heart and Small Intestine, with dark and scanty urination; red from Shan Gen to the nasal bridge indicates Heat in the Heart and Stomach, with difficult urination and defecation. The Di Ge (Chin) is low and Kan Yin (Note: Text says "Corresponds to Summer, White indicates Kidney Deficiency", which contradicts standard TCM where Kidney/Water corresponds to Winter/Black. Translating literally as per source): Kidney Water. Cyan at Cheng Jiang indicates fright during eating, irritability, and night crying; yellow indicates vomiting and regurgitation; red indicates Qi pathology in the Kidneys; red cheeks indicate Lung Heat. The nose is in the center of the face, corresponding to the Four Seasons; a red and yellow Zhun Tou indicates health. The Spleen corresponds to the lips; red indicates thirst. If Ascaris bites the heart, the lips will invert. The Ren Zhong (Philtrum) reflects the Small Intestine; it should be deep and long, not flat and full. Blackness here indicates death from diarrhea/dysentery. Redness in the Five Yue (facial peaks) indicates Heat; pale white indicates Deficiency. Chen's poem on Five Organs' Fright, Accumulation, Cold, and Heat states: Liver Fright starts at the hairline, Liver Accumulation is in the Food Granary (corner of mouth), Liver Cold makes lips cyan-white, Liver Heat is at the glabella; Heart Fright is at Yin Tang, Heart Accumulation is at the temple corners, Heart Cold is at the Tai Yang position, Heart Heat is on the cheeks; Spleen Fright is at the hairline, Spleen Accumulation makes lips yellow, Spleen Cold is in the middle of the brows, Spleen Heat is at the Tai Yang acupoint; Lung Fright makes the hairline red, Lung Accumulation is at the hairline, Lung Cold is seen at the Ren Zhong, Lung Heat is beside the cheeks; Kidney Fright is at the ear-front acupoint, Kidney Accumulation is in the eye bags, Kidney Cold makes the forehead purple, Kidney Heat makes the Food Granary red.
Red Qi appearing indicates Phlegm-Heat congestion. Yin Tang belongs to the Heart. Red indicates Phlegm-Heat; Blue-Black indicates Fright-Phlegm; Yellow-Green indicates Wind-Phlegm. Cyan exposure indicates Wind-Fright and palpitations. Coal-black indicates pain and malignant transformation; Orange-yellow indicates Food Injury (Right Taiyin, Wen and Wu Terraces both cyan indicate Spleen Deficiency with vomiting/diarrhea, though some cases are Heat). White indicates Malnutrition Consumption (Gan Lao) and Cold, with impaired Lung Qi. Purple indicates intense Heat. Turning black indicates death. Cyan covering the mouth corner is difficult to treat, indicating mania from fright. Black covering the Tai Yang acupoint is untreatable. Left Tai Yang cyan indicates mild fright; red indicates Wind-Cold with nasal congestion and fever from Bian Zheng; black-cyan indicates Milk Accumulation. Right Tai Yang cyan indicates severe fright; red indicates Wind convulsions of eyes; black indicates death. Red reaching Taiyin indicates internal and external Heat; connecting to Wen Terrace indicates extreme Heat; connecting to Wu Terrace indicates gradual development of pathological changes. Red glow on Nian Shou (middle nose) indicates pus and blood (flat is longevity, depressed is premature death); cyan-black at Shan Gen indicates frequent disasters and danger, leading to death. Black indicates Dysentery; Red-Black indicates exhaustion from vomiting/diarrhea; Yellow indicates Cholera-like disorder; Red indicates Night Crying; Purple indicates Food Injury. Vermilion Bird penetrating both pupils indicates Fire entering the Water region; opacity indicates Toxic Heat; yellow sclera/black iris indicates critical Shang Han. Green Snake winding around Si Bai indicates Liver overacting on Lungs. Cyan indicates Liver Wind; Yellow indicates Food Accumulation. Watch out for diarrhea/dysentery affecting the Yang; beware of coughing with blue discoloration. Severe pain presents with cyan face and puckered lips; impending Wind-Fright presents with red face and darting eyes. Bright Red Flame indicates External Wind-Cold; Floating Yellow Qi indicates Internal Food Stagnation. Alternating Yellow and White indicates continuous Gan Accumulation; Red and Cyan together indicates Wind Pathogen causing clonic spasms (Yong Zhong). Qi deficiency causes a sunken fontanelle; Red indicates Fright-Heat night crying and swollen/red fontanelle from Phlegm-Heat. Soft anterior fontanelle indicates Mother's Qi and Blood weakness; unstable posterior fontanelle indicates Father's Essence deficiency; thin hair tufts indicate Blood decline. Yellow and dry/withered indicates Fu Organ Heat. Broken flesh and withered skin indicates death. Liver Qi causes eye discharge and tears; Spleen Cold causes saliva flowing down the chin. Normal mouth color is red; dryness indicates Spleen Heat; white indicates Blood loss; cyan-yellow indicates Fright-Accumulation; cyan-black indicates death. Puffy face and eyes indicate abdominal distension and asthma; frequent frowning indicates abdominal pain and excessive crying. Long-term illness with red eyebrows indicates night crying; purple indicates Wind-Heat; bright red indicates death; wrinkles indicate dysentery. Feng Chi and Qi Chi resembling yellow earth is unfavorable; Red Feng Chi indicates impending Wind-Phlegm convulsion; Red Qi Chi indicates Wind-Cold with Heat entering interior. Cheeks resembling Qing Dai (Azurite) indicate Ke Wu (Guest Fright). Yellow indicates Phlegm Excess; Red indicates Fright-Wind; Red-Chief indicates Wind-Cold. Black at Feng Men indicates Hernia; Cyan indicates Fright (Red indicates vomiting/diarrhea); smooth and broad is auspicious; dull and dark is ominous. Zhong Ting, Tian Ting, Si Kong, Yin Tang, temples, and broad areas are all Ming Men regions; cyan-black indicating Fright-Wind is a bad omen, and depression/injury is also taboo. Hands counting objects indicates impending Liver Wind; holding head with hands indicates death. Face like vermilion paste indicates Heart Fire like roasting. Preferring warmth in sitting/sleeping indicates Wind-Cold invasion; seeking cold indicates attacking Irritating Heat. Large belly and small legs indicate Spleen failing to transform, leading to Gan; staring eyes and open mouth indicate critical condition leading to death. Alas! Among the five body parts, the head is supreme; in the face, only the Spirit (Shen) can be relied upon. In pediatric diseases, if the eyes lack luster, the black pupil does not move, eyelashes lack sharpness, resembling fish or cat eyes, or eyes are closed with opaque black pupils, death ensues. If externally dull but Spirit is hidden internally without escaping, survival is possible. Full black pupils with clear brightness indicate few illnesses. More white sclera, or yellow/small pupils, indicate weak constitution and frequent illness. Red inner canthus indicates Heart Heat; pale red indicates Heart Deficient Heat; cyan indicates Liver Heat; light cyan indicates Liver Deficiency; yellow indicates Spleen Heat; no luster indicates Kidney Deficiency; white and turbid indicates Lung Heat. Regarding voice differences: Light voice indicates Qi weakness; heavy/muddy voice indicates Pain or Wind. Loud shouting indicates Heat approaching madness; urgent voice indicates Spirit Fright; obstructed voice indicates Phlegm; trembling voice indicates Cold; choking voice indicates Qi stagnation. Panting indicates shortness of breath; sneezing indicates Wind-Cold. Deep, non-resonant crying from fright indicates severity; muddy, quiet voice indicates Gan Accumulation. Not crying loudly from birth, with squeaky voice, indicates premature death. Crying types differ in dryness and wetness: Direct sound without tears indicates Pain; continuous sound with many tears indicates Fright. Irritable, hard-to-soothe crying is difficult to cure; restless, rapid voice indicates Cold invasion. At the onset of disease, yawning occurs first; this is governed by the Liver. Red face indicates Wind-Heat; cyan face indicates Fright-Wind; yellow face indicates Spleen Deficiency; excessive sleep indicates Internal Heat; restlessness indicates Qi Heat; muffled voice indicates Wind-Cold. Sudden screaming due to intense Fire indicates Fire agitation and Qi Deficiency, leading to death. Occurring at midnight often involves mouth ulcers; check immediately. Coarse food differs from rich delicacies; coarse cloth differs from silk. Although we know the interior through the exterior, do not seek the sword by carving the boat (be rigid). Song for Predicting Lifespan: Soft body, weak genitals, four cracks on head, small or high umbilicus, flesh not adhering; sparse/brittle hair, short crying, visible blue veins all over body—all indicate short life; swollen buttocks, undeveloped kneecaps, inability to squat/walk/stand leads to death; dark umbilicus, aged appearance, dignified temperament—this is the child who will live long.
