扰攘之世,同火化也,若用辛热之药,则发黄、出斑,变坏之病作矣。盖人内火既动,外火又侵,所以辛热发

Light, regulating, slowing, bland, and clearing; summerheat, dampness, resolving, harmonizing, and level; fire, purging, cold, and tonifying; sweet, warm, astringent, and nourishing. Select according to the syndrome, truly possessing the untransmitted subtleties of the ancients. This supplements the omissions of Zhang Zhongjing; it does not mean disregarding Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). One view holds that in times of peace and stability, the transformation is akin to water; even with acrid-hot medicines, no other syndromes will arise. In times of turmoil, the transformation is akin to fire; if acrid-hot medicines are used, jaundice and macules may appear, and deteriorating diseases will emerge. Since internal fire is already active and external fire invades, therefore, inducing sweating with acrid-hot medicines is inferior to acrid-warm ones, and acrid-warm is inferior to acrid-cool medicines.
(Light Agent) Fangfeng Tongsheng San combined with Yiyuan San is named Shuangjie San (Double-Resolving Powder). For pathogens at the exterior requiring sweating, several doses should be taken consecutively for certain cure. If unresolved, the disease has transmitted and changed.
(Clearing Agent) Liangge San is used after sweating, vomiting, or purging, when there are no other distinct syndromes. Premature purging may lead to Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) with deficiency and fullness, or it can be combined with Tianshui San or Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
(Resolving Agent) Xiaochaihu Tang is used for half-exterior half-interior syndromes, or combined with Liangge San.
(Slowing Agent) Dachaihu Tang is used for slight interior heat, or combined with Jiedu Tang (Detoxification Decoction).
(Cold Agent) Dachengqi Tang is used for significant interior heat. For significant exterior and interior heat, combine with Dachaihu Tang. When interior heat is severe and exterior heat gradually diminishes, combine with Jiedu Tang.
(Regulating Agent) Tiaoweichengqi Tang is used for interior heat without distension and fullness.
(Vomiting Agent) Guiti San is used for chest fullness, wheezing, and vomiting, especially when the Yang pulse is very tight.
(Sweet Agent) Tianshui Yiyuan San is used to regulate residual heat from Shanghan (Cold Damage).
(Fire Agent) Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction)
(Summerheat Agent) Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is used for Zhongshu (Heatstroke) with spontaneous sweating, or for half-exterior half-interior syndromes, possibly adding Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma). If sweating fails to resolve the heat and the pulse remains floating, use this to resolve it. Or, if interior heat is abundant internally leading to extreme Yang Jue (Yang Reversal), all due to failure to purge earlier, simply administer Liangge San and Tianshui San together as one, harmonizing Yin and Yang, cleansing the Zang-Fu organs, so that other syndromes will naturally not arise.
(Bland Agent) Wuling San is taken frequently after Baihu Tang resolves Zhongshu, or combined with Tianshui San.
(Dampness Agent) Sanhua Shenyao Wan
(Purging Agent) Sanhuang Wan
(Tonifying Agent) Fangfeng Danggui Yin
(Level Agent) Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction)
(Nourishing Agent) Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction)
(Astringent Agent) Weifeng Tang
(Warm Agent) Lizhong Tang
(Harmonizing Agent) Pingwei San
(Chest Binding) Daxie Xiong Tang/Wan and Xiaoxie Xiong Tang/Wan
(Macule Eruption) Liangge San added with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). Add Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) for tight chest.
(Irritability and Insomnia) Zhichi Tang (Gardeniae and Soya Bean Decoction)
(Jaundice) Yinchenshao Tang combined with Wuling San.
(Irritability and Thirst) Liangge San combined with Wuling San without Guizhi and Yiyuan San.
() Chengqi Tang combined with Jiedu Tang, used together for delirium and mania. The above eighteen agents, twenty-four formulas, and forty-four medicinal materials, treat initial syndromes of Wen Shu (Warmth and Summerheat), miscellaneous syndromes, residual syndromes, as well as miscellaneous diseases involving Phlegm-Fire and Damp-Heat. They exhaust their subtleties completely, applicable to both men and women alike.
