Ershu Erchen Decoction (Two-Atractylodes and Two-Chen Decoction) treats various dampness pathogens and phlegm-fluid retention.
Atractylodis Rhizoma Albae (Baizhu, 白术) (3 qian), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) (2 qian), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏) (each 2 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, 炙甘草) (each 1 qian). Add three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and two dates (Dazao, 大枣), decoct and take.
Wupi Yin (Five-Peeled Drink) treats all types of Qi edema and water edema.
Poriae Cortex (Fulingpi, 茯苓皮), Arecae Pericarpium (Dafuppi, 大腹皮), Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) (each 1.5 qian), Zingiberis Pericarpium (Shengjiangpi, 生姜皮) (0.7 fen). Decoct in water and take.
This medicine uses peels to treat the skin, without disturbing the Zang-Fu organs. Do not disregard it because it is simple and common.
Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 人参), Atractylodis Rhizoma Albae (Baizhu, 白术), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (each 2 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhigancao, 炙甘草) (1 qian). Add Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 大枣), decoct and take.
Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) and Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) (both seen in *Shanghan Lun*).
Daoshui Fuling Tang (Water-Guiding Poria Decoction) treats edema where the head, face, hands, feet, and entire body swell like rotting melons; pressing leaves a depression that does not immediately rise back up. The chest and abdomen are distended and full with panting, making it impossible to turn over or sleep soundly. Food intake is difficult, urination is scanty and obstructed, feeling as if cutting with a knife during voiding, or urine resembles bean dregs and is extremely scarce. For those who have taken various medicines for panting, coughing, and rebellious Qi without effect, using this decoction will gradually promote diuresis and lead to recovery.
Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 泽泻), Red Poria (Chifuling, 赤茯苓), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬), Atractylodis Rhizoma Albae (Baizhu, 白术) (each 3 liang), Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮), Perillae Folium (Zisu, 紫苏), Areca Seed (Binglang, 槟榔), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua, 木瓜) (each 1 liang), Arecae Pericarpium (Dafuppi, 大腹皮), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen, 砂仁), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香) (each 0.75 qian 5 fen). Each dose takes 1-2 liang, with two cups of water and thirty stalks of Junci Medulla (Dengcao, 灯草), decoct until reduced to 0.8 cup, take after meals. For severe cases, use 5 liang, decoct strongly, and take at Wugeng (early morning, 3-5 AM).
Mahuang Gancao Tang (Ephedra and Licorice Decoction) (from *Jingui Yaolue*)
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (3 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 qian). With two cups of water, first decoct Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) until one and a half cups remain, strain off the dregs, add Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), decoct until reduced to 0.8 cup, and take.
This formula disperses Lung Qi upwards, assists Spleen Qi in the middle, and circulates Water Qi outwards. Its efficacy surpasses that of Jisheng Shenqi Wan. Furthermore, edema differs from Shanghan (Cold Damage) syndrome. In Shanghan syndrome, one fears excessive sweating leading to Yang collapse; in edema, more sweating is better. Water is excreted through sweat pores. Contemporary physicians say one must "open the ghost gate" (induce sweating), but there is no concept of Yang collapse here.
Mahuang Fuzi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) is the previous formula plus Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) 1.5 qian.
The dosage differs slightly from that in *Shanghan Lun*, transforming the method of warming meridians and dispelling cold into a formula for warming meridians and promoting diuresis.
Jisheng Shenqi Wan (Jisheng Kidney Qi Pill) treats edema with scanty urination and panting.
Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang, 熟地黄) (4 liang), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (3 liang), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸), Dioscoreae Rhizoma Huai (Huaishanyao, 怀山药), Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 丹皮), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 泽泻), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 车前子), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 肉桂) (each 1 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) (5 qian, processed). Grind the above into fine powder, make pills with refined honey the size of wheat seeds. Take 3 qian sent down with Dengcao Tang (Junci Medulla Decoction), twice a day.
Shenxian Jiuqi Tang (Immortal Nine-Qi Decoction) ("Immortal" refers to the efficacy of the medicine; "Nine Qi" refers to the nine emotional/physiological states: anger, joy, sorrow, fear, cold, heat, shock, fatigue, and thought. The *Classic* says: Anger causes Qi to rise upward; Joy causes Qi to slacken; Sorrow causes Qi to dissipate; Fear causes Qi to sink downward; Cold causes Qi to contract; Heat causes Qi to leak outward; Fatigue causes Qi to be consumed; Thought causes Qi to knot; Shock causes Qi to become chaotic. Hence the name.)
Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Jianghuang, 姜黄), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) (stir-fried). Grind each into fine powder. Take 5-6 qian each time, mixed with light salt water on an empty stomach. I treat abdominal distension by administering it with warm wine.
Hu Yinzi said: I used this to treat abdominal distension, and its effect was miraculous.
