予制此药普送,只前七味,服者多效。或问∶药极轻微,而取效甚广,何也?予曰∶药
不贵险峻,惟期中病而已,此方系予苦心揣摩而得也。盖肺体属金,畏火者也,过热则咳;

Treats various types of cough.
Jiegeng (Stellariae Radix, stir-fried), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Ziwan (Asteris Radix, steamed), Bubai (Stemonae Rhizoma, steamed), Baiqian (Cynanchi Stauntonii Rhizoma et Radix, steamed, each 2 jin), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried, 12 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, washed to remove the white pith, 1 jin).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water. Administer after meals and before bedtime. If it is an initial contraction of wind-cold, mix with ginger decoction.
I prepared this medicine for general distribution, using only the aforementioned seven herbs, and most users found it effective. Someone asked: "The medicinal properties are extremely mild, yet the efficacy is very broad. Why?" I replied: "Medicines are not valued for being drastic or hazardous, but for hitting the target of the disease accurately. This formula was obtained through my painstaking deliberation." The lung's constitution belongs to Metal, which fears Fire; excessive heat causes coughing. The nature of Metal is rigid and dry, abhorring Cold; excessive cold also causes coughing. Moreover, the Lung is a delicate organ that cannot tolerate harsh attacking agents. Externally, it governs the skin and hair, making it most susceptible to pathogenic factors. If exterior-releasing and dispersing methods are not employed, the pathogen will linger unresolved. The Classics state: "Slight cold leads to slight cough." This is the manifestation of Cold invasion, resembling a small thief; opening the door to drive it away removes it. Physicians who fail to examine carefully may recklessly use cooling or astringent agents, inevitably resulting in "locking the door and keeping the thief inside." The pathogen, wanting to exit but having no way out, must penetrate and scatter, leading to coughing with blood. The Lung has two orifices: one in the nose and one in the throat. The nasal orifice should be open and not closed, while the laryngeal orifice should be closed and not open. Now, if the nasal orifice is blocked, the laryngeal orifice will be forced open; can one remain unconcerned? This formula is warm and moistening, peaceful, neither cold nor hot. It avoids the risk of excessive attacking action and possesses the momentum of opening the door to drive out the thief. Therefore, the exogenous pathogen is easily dispersed, and Lung Qi becomes tranquil. This is likely why it is effective when administered. I attach this discussion to consult the wise.
To stop cough and relieve asthma.
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, 5 fen), Hutaorou (Juglandis Semen, 3 qian, ground with skin), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices).
Decoct in water and take orally.
If this formula uses Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) instead of Shengjiang, it is named Weirui Hutan Tang (Polygonatum Walnut Decoction), treating Yin deficiency syndromes.
Another prescription: Use 2 jin of White Honey (Mel) and 2 jin of Juglandis Semen. Steam thoroughly over water. Mix with boiling water to take orally at any time.
