Whenever one or two doses are taken postpartum, it is excellent for eliminating blood stasis and generating new blood.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 3 qian) [Black] Ginger (Heijiang, 5 fen) Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 1.5 qian) Motherwort Herba (Yimucao, 1 qian) Peach Seed (Taoren, peeled of skin and tips, removing double-kernel ones, stir-fried, crushed, 7 seeds).
Decoct in water and take orally. Adding a small amount of child's urine (Tongbian) is especially beneficial.
To treat palpitations and spontaneous sweating after childbirth, use this formula to calm the mind.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 3 qian) [Black] Ginger (Heijiang, 7 fen) Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Zaoren, stir-fried, 1.5 qian) Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 5 pieces, pitted).
Decoct in water and take orally. If spontaneous sweating persists heavily after taking the medicine, accompanied by palpitations with a sense of insecurity, fearing syncope and collapse, immediately add Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 2 qian) and Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Shu Fuzi, 1 qian) to first protect the root. The heavy use of Angelicae Sinensis Radix in the formula prevents blood stasis from lingering. Ginseng can be used; people often hesitate due to doubt, leading to errors. I have treated patients with severe deficiency after recent childbirth who were cured using several liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, and others cured after dozens of doses of Shiquan Dabu Decoction added with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata. If pain is caused by blood stasis, Shixiao Wan can be taken intermittently; attacking the pathogen and tonifying deficiency proceed simultaneously without interference.
Shiquan Dabu Decoction (see Deficiency Damage).
For postpartum blood syncope, it is appropriate to burn lacquerware and fumigate with vinegar-treated charcoal to open the orifices. If the condition is caused by blood stasis attacking upwards, resulting in chest and abdominal distension and pain that refuses pressure, Gui Xiong Tang should be used to administer Shixiao Wan. If excessive blood loss leads to palpitations and spontaneous sweating, Gui Jiang Yin with added Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma should be used. For severe deficiency, Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix is added. If spleen and stomach weakness causes phlegm-jue leading to dizziness and nausea/vomiting, Liujunzi Tang is used. Generally, postpartum dizziness mostly belongs to Qi deficiency. Observing external symptoms: pale complexion, closed eyes, open mouth, and relaxed hands are all signs of Qi deficiency impending collapse. If accompanied by cold breath from mouth and nose, and cold extremities, this indicates true deficiency with cold; rapid warming and tonification are needed, typically using over one liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma assisted by Ginger and Aconite, so as to restore vitality. This must not be neglected.
