The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian connects with the face and descends into the nose. Whenever there is facial edema accompanied by pain, it is due to Wind pathogen. Medical texts state: Facial swelling indicates Wind, while foot swelling indicates Water-Dampness. It is appropriate to use Shengma Gegen Tang (Ephedra and Pueraria Decoction) added with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) as the primary treatment. If complicated by Damp-Fluid retention, Wupi Yin (Five-Bark Decoction) should be added, which is an excellent method. However, there are cases of yellowish puffy facial edema, which belong to Damp-Heat; and cases of sallow, flaccid, and puffy complexion, which belong to Spleen Deficiency. For Damp-Heat, Hezhong Wan (Harmonize the Middle Pill) is indicated. For Spleen Deficiency, Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is indicated. If sores appear on the face, resembling chickenpox and spreading incessantly, apply Huangbai San (Phellodendron Powder) externally, and they will heal immediately.
Luo Li (Scrofula), a manifestation of Liver disease. The Liver governs the sinews. When Liver meridian blood is dry and Fire is present, the sinews become tense, leading to Luo Li. Luo Li often occurs around the ears, which is the region governed by the Liver channel. At the initial stage, Xiaoluo Wan (Eliminate Scrofula Pill) should be used to dissipate it. Do not use needles or knives, nor apply medications for ulceration. If the disease has persisted for a long time and already ulcerated, apply Puji Wanquan Gao (Universal Salvation Plaster) externally, take Xiaoluo Wan internally, and combine it with Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); recovery is assured. One must also avoid anger, refrain from fried and roasted foods, and avoid substances that cause Qi stagnation or rebellion, to prevent continuous discharge of pus and gradual progression into consumptive deficiency. Should those suffering from this condition fail to observe these precautions!
This prescription is remarkably effective, with countless cures. I have also had it printed and distributed widely.
Xuan Shen (Prepared Scrophulariae Radix), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, processed with vinegar), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, heart removed and steamed), each 4 liang.
Grind all into powder, form pills with refined honey. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with boiled water, twice daily.
The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) says: The West corresponds to the color white, its internal connection is with the Lung, and the nose is the opening of the Lung. Nasal congestion is due to Lung Cold; clear nasal discharge is due to Wind affecting the Lung, treatable with Xiangsu San (Aucklandia and Bupleurum Powder). If turbid nasal discharge flows continuously from the nose, it is called Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis). This results from Cold invading the brain, persisting for a long time without dispersing, causing constant flow of turbid mucus like a trickling spring. Initially, Bi Yuan is often caused by Cold, but over time, Cold transforms into Heat. Treatment should focus on unblocking the orifices and clearing Heat, using Chuanxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum and Tea Leaf Powder). Furthermore, if fleshy growths appear in the nose, called Bi Zhi (Nasal Polyps), which are foul-smelling and extremely painful to touch, apply a small amount of Bai Fan San (Alum Powder) locally; they will dissolve into water and disappear instantly. If bleeding from the nose does not stop, it is called Bi Nu (Epistaxis), treated with Sisheng Wan (Four Generations Pill) and Shengdi Liuwei Tang (Rehmannia Six-Ingredient Decoction). If bleeding persists, add Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, now typically replaced by Shui Niu Jiao/Bubali Cornu).
